Reddots for the most part have zero magnification. The advantage of a reddot is speed and speed is needed for quick shots at close range. Nothing wrong with running a reddot on a rimfire, just as long as it fits the type of environment/shooting style you intend to use it for. A low magnification optic might be just as viable with more to offer with a variable magnification. A shooting buddy runs a $50 Tasco reddot on his 22 for gophers and has been for the last 4 years. Optic has held up but it limits the range at which he can make hits. I hear good things about the Bushnell TRS 25 as well. Its significantly smaller than the Tasco but it costs a fair bit more.
