red dots for big game

I've got an aimpoint clone on my M14 using a scout mount setup. It's around 2 inches or under at 100 meters and SO FAST on target it's almost like shooting a shotgun or "snap shooting"...

Cheers
Jay

how are they for shooting ???lets say at 250 yds.. ive neaver used one..a hunting buddy had one years ago..
i think its still in the bush were he tossed it:eek:

250... Not with the clones... BUT... If your willing to spend the money, a real aimpoint can be had with the smaller 2 moa dot and that should get you to 250 meters or so with it.

The aimpoint clone I have is a 4 moa dot and I have tried it at 200 meters and it is minute of deer, but I would not be comfortable past 150. Anywhere I hunt the shots are inside of that distance...

Like I said before, it is VERY fast on target and makes a heck of a setup for a brush gun...

Cheers

I have an XD5000 Aimpoint on my 284 Mauser and its fantastic.I dropped a spike horn at 185yds, with both eyes open.He was just poking along and bang flopped! Target aquisition is almost instant. They get my vote,JITC

I have a couple of Holosights... and a bunch of reddots.
I have shot lots of deer with them both... the size of the dot is the detemining factor.
Most reddots are 6 MOA which means at 100 yards the dot covers 6 inches and at 200 yards 12 inches.
The Bushnell Holosights are 1 MOA dots which can easily shoot the longer ranges.
I have used a 6 MOA reddot and a slug-gun to shoot deer at 150 yards on a few occasions. You basically have to look at the deer through the reddot and center the vitals... it is as easy as using an aperture sight.... easier.

he still cusses that thing to this day:p

JYC..you seen the area we hunt deer in...im getting really interested in one of these sights..
what do you think? a good idea or not to get one?
thanks for all the input here all:)

yea i stop using my scope cuz red dots r sooo much faster bagged my deer with one this year i swear by them they don't get in the way as much as a large scope

I use them on all of my hunting rifles plus my two muzzle loaders.

I started using them about 15 years ago, and haven't looked back. I love their speed and positive sight picture. Also, if you shoot with both eyes open, you can make an accurate shot at reasonable hunting ranges with a fogged or even totally blocked objective lens. Most of my hunt camp has switched to them in that period.

If you tend to shoot regularly at long range, I'd imagine that a scope would be the better choice though. I killed one deer at a little over 200 yds with one, but the remainder of my shots have been at 100 yds or less (actually most are under 50 yds).

what would you suggest for my first one to buy?dont be to cheap...remember its my money your spending..

I've got a Aimpoint Comp 2X on my Rem 7600 carbine 30-06 mounted on the front weaver base. This aimpoint has the 2MOA dot and has 2X magnification. With 180 grain Accubonds over H4350, it will shoot 1MOA groups @100 yards. As for target aquisition .....this scope / Rifle combo has been lovingly named the jerk-o-matic by Big Redd but even he can rittle off five shots and hit 3" groups in the blink of an eye. Great bush gun for heavy cover or even black bear hunting with the illuminated dot. By the way, the battery life in the Aimpoint scopes is rediculously LONG.

I'm not someone who's particularly enamoured of small dots. My aimpoint has a one minute dot, and the centre dot of my holosight is one minute as well. Both of these sights would be OK if I were hunting at 250 yds or more, but I don't do that. Most of mine have 3-6 minute dots, and I haven't had a problem yet (even with my uncharacteristic 213 yd deer).

Most of mine are Bushnell (Sportview?) sights with a 30mm tube and the newest have 6 minute dots. I've been (generally) staying at the lower end of the price range since precision accuracy and optical quality don't really matter much if you're shooting 30-70 yds.

Recently I've bought a reflex sight from Marstar and a couple of the new short/fat types, and don't have anything bad to say about them, (based on limited data).

I don't mean to drift here.

But how would a red dot be on a .22 semi for grouse in the head shot department?
I too have been interested in them but have never used one before.

I've had 'em all and junked a bunch. The best ones I've found are the Holo sights/Eotec and the Aimpoints. I'm talkin the real mccoy not the knock offs. You get what you pay for so go for he real thing. The holograph vs the tube design is user preference but having not to have to center the dot sure makes shooting fast.
