Red Dots on Lever Guns

Now, it depends on what you want. If you are after a practical shooter, yeah, optics are acceptable, but IMHO, its the equivalent of letting Bubba loose on a gun - a crime I've committed many times. However, from an aesthetic point of view, there are 4 things that do not belong on a lever gun. I won't use any descriptive language for fear of getting another 2-point infraction, even though comments are made in jest. They are, and not necessarily in this order:

- Checkering (my Guide Gun is checkered)
- Optics
- Big loop levers
- Recoil pads (I have one on a Guide Gun)
- Pistol grips
- Push-button safety
- Any kind of tacticool add-ons - and for this, death by hanging should be the penalty, unless you own one of the Mossberg Zombie Guns. If you own one of those, that is punishment enough. (Joke, mods, joke!)

If you are unsure of the acceptability of an add-on, just ask WJWA - Would John Wayne Approve?

My old Pap has an Aim Point red dot on his BLR .308... but when we are approached by other hunters he removes his Elmer Fudd hat and drops it over the sight... classy guy.

I just sprayed coffee all over my computer and coworker...i need to keep more current on these threads...

I agree , the mods have gotten a wee bit strict

I am seriously considering one of these dot-thingies for a couple of my lever-guns as loathed as I am to admit it. I ended up putting a 4x scope on my henry .22mag, not because I couldn't do decent work with the iron-sights but because the adjustment for different loads sucks big time. Find one load that shoots best (luckily cci maximags) but one notch on the elevator is 8" to low at 50 yards and the next notch on the elevator is a 12"high #*$#($#@$#@. Same thing with my marlin 44mag. It's got a williams peep on it which works great... as long as you don't want to change loads. Want to shoot some light .44special target loads for plinking? 12" low and way off center at 50 yards. Not much point in wasting the first hour of a plinking trip and a box of ammo redialling in (which is hard to do on my peep) just to have to redo it again completely for hunting ammo. That little Burris Fastfire thing might be just the ticket.
