Gday guys, thought i would add soemthin from downunder.

I went for a hunt yesterday afternoon, there was a slight breeze but otherwise a beautiful spring day.
my plan was to climb high up a ridge an watch a west facing slope for a few hours...
plan was cut short when i sat down to have a drink an glass the opposing face.. about half an hour went by an looking through binos i heard the trees directly behind me moving about as if the wind had picked up over the ridge.. i didnt think too much of it until i heard it again an thought i better check it out.....

thats when i was looking at an unsuspected Red stag, i wasn sure what i should do, i sat tight but then i had to reach for my phone to film an photograph this animal as i didnt want to shoot it.... but then i grabbed my gun after some footage, scoped it at 15ms an declined the shot.
i really analised the animal, noting it was a 9 point fairly youngish deer i was happy when he moved down beside me an then cut my wind an barked a few times an moved off into the gulley head 40ms further..
as it spooked i noted there was another stag behind him further up the ridge an to me looked a bit of a mongrel/malform head an the decision was made to pack up the crap laying around an stalk off...

10minutes later an constant barking i could see both the stags an delibratly shot toward the smaller one... clean missing!
a quick follow up from the Abolt WSM an id secured the smaller one..

the bigger guy barked as to ask where is my mate, an hurry up young fella... but he never came so i stalked him up an caught him about to dissapear, looking toward me i fired for a neck shot an again cleanly missed.. i followed up incase of blood, none was found an a few more barks were heard while i butchered the downed deer..

anyway heres a photo for now.
we just got back from bringing all the meat out off him..

the farmer wants the deer shot, but im goin to try manage the animals a little an see how i go, aslong as i tip a few over now an then its all good :)

trip to punch some paper is on the cards before i pack that a bolt with me again .... fairly confident it is shooting out lol, after the big trip it went on last month.. in the ute

You'd know, wouldnt you Duffy?

She'l be right mate..... she'l be right.

im sure he owns a spotlight an 22 rimfire, if it anoys him that there is a few big stags growing up the back hills, he knows where to find them.

mostly hinds an does come out to improved pastures.

im going back up in 2 days, when i return il make a bit of a hunt trip with photos.

cheers

Awesome.. The bbq and some Fosters will help with the steaks.:D

Actually a lot of canadians think that "Foster's" is the beer of choice in AU. They have heaps of different top quality beers.

I liked VB (Victoria Bitters) and Crown and Tooies (sp?) and Cascade (NZ beer) and some beer from the Northern Territory that I can not remember the name of right now (must have had a lot of them that night).

the farmer wants the deer shot, but im goin to try manage the animals a little an see how i go,

thanks for posting very cool. If farmer wants the deer dead kill everyone you see don't let him get wind that you are managing for a trophy on his dime! That wont go over well.

like i said, dont worry too much about what im doin an whats happenen ay... i dont have to post pictures or keep some hunting reports up in here.......

Its a relatively young stag, Mature reds can get up to 250kg, I would only be lying if i told you a weight..

they are very much like a Elk, i think they are related actually with the Wapiti.

Id say it had its 2nd or 3rd set of antlers...

I used a 300WSM with 150gr corelokts, this is only my 2nd Red, i took my first with a 270win 140 accubonds, they arnt hard to kill for the size. :)

Looks great, was in oz in the early 90's, old guy in Queensland took me for a ride in his ut (truck) to see the ranch. His landcriuser had a gun rack in the back and he had two in it ready to get some roos.

What part are you from? I enjoyed Perth the most, the west coast was the best.

Good luck with the hunt.
