redbone coon hounds

Great book and not a bad movie either. My very first dog I had growing up as a kid was a red bone hound. Probably the friendliest dog I ever had. They are great with kids (at least the one we had was) and extremely loyal. Mine would pull me in a sled all the way to school.

What Jimmy13 said, had one "Charlie" bestest dog I ever had. Stupid as a stick, but friendly and the kids loved him. They loved rubbing his ears. Would never come when called once he got a scent.

I had a black and tan named Elvis (ain't nothin' but a hound dog...). Best dog ever. He's been gone 20 years and I still miss him.
He wouldn't come when called either, if he had his nose to the ground :~)

I've got two rescue Treeing Walker X's, big male Leroy and little female Kitty. They need everything a hunting dog needs. Lots of exercise but very friendly, social, gentle and good with other dogs. Both of them are also 100% game and ready to chase anything that runs. Nose to the ground and when they are on something they are on it hard. We are careful not to let them off leash in the bush. Since they were long time strays I'm worried they are a bit to independent to bother coming back...

Age and previous care are huge with rescues. Are they gun shy, abused, neglected, hunted with or never hunted or even trained. Its a bit of a crap shoot but if you have a bit of back story and can get in a good visit you'll get two new best friends.

Google redbone coon hounds and some interesting stuff comes up... (NSFW)

if anyone else has info , or stories , keep it coming ..... thanks guys :)

I'm still on the fence here .

one of the biggest things right now for me is , I'm seriously thinking about taking a job locally that would mean working 4 days on , 4 days off , 12 hours a day .......

what I'm thinking of to help with being gone for almost 13 hours , is rebuild the fences in the back yard ( I'm thinking about 8 feet tall with a roller on the top to prevent climbing and a couple feet into the ground to pevent digging under ) then fence it to the back of the house and install a doggy door .
that would give them 1/2 a acre to play in while I'm not home ..... I'm also hoping this would make it possible for the dog to " let himself out " when needed .

off leash recall would be a big thing , I would like to be able to take my dog with me when out prospecting and have them pretty much hang around nearby and be able to look after themselves ....

I met a guy with some blue tick hounds ..... again beautiful dogs ..... and I love their howl .... but holy h*ll are they loud ...... neighbours would love that

Hounds are a very loyal breed once they learn tgaey can trust you. There was a male beahle and a female walker hound running at large for over a month last summer in the area that my buddys parents lived. They showed up at there house one day for some food and water and decided ti stay. His father was in no shape to care for these dogs do to age and decided yo call the dog catcher. Keep in mind he lives in the country in a small township. The reply from the dog catcher was to just put them down if he vouldnt care for them. My buddy called me and I decided to take them with hesitation but they are pretty good dogs. They live outside as when in the house will destroy it to get back outside. It took about 2 weeks of spending time with them one on one and together for them to realize they could trust me. I ran them on deer this year and they worked great and always came home every day.

Still hounds are not really good for a gut that wants a dog that will just hang around well of leash .I can take my beagles for a walk of leash but if thy bump a deer or bunny thy are gone .and if I am doing something in the yard and not paying attention to them thy get bored and wander ..Dutch

As with blue ticks, redbones are also loud with that familiar prolonged howl (baying) that they do. I distinctly remember the neighbors sometimes being annoyed at how loud it was.

it is like they adjust their voices until they hit the resonance frequency that matches their chest size and then their sound just penetrates everything ....

the neighbors heeler has adopted me as her friend ( same dog in my profile pic ) , maybe i'll just stick to hanging out with her for awhile :D ( that is a story in its self that I might post in the off topics soon)

Our hound is part Black & Tan Coonhound and part Bloodhound with a bit of Beagle thrown in. He's a big boy with a big barrel chest, and his "barrooooo" can be heard all over the neighbourhood. When he's out on his walks he stays on lead, doing his impersonation of a vacuum cleaner, hot on the trail of who knows what. But he is a loyal, loving, gentle soul, and he likes to listen to my music collection.
