Redding bump die lesson!

After fourth firing and neck sizing only cases were becoming difficult to chamber.

No problemo, I'll just bump the shoulder back a bit with my shiny new Redding body die. Took the initial headspace measurement of the first fired case before I sized it (used Hornady LNL caliper attachment w/ insert). Also took a bunch of other measurements so I could see the before and after effects of the body die. Initial headspace measurement was 1.631. I know I need to get it to 1.6295ish for it to chamber without resistance so I didn't need to move it much. Here goes...

Figured I try bumping the shoulder by first adjusting the die out 1 turn from the point where it contacted the shell holder and work my way back in.

First measurement 1.631 (no change).

Adjust it in 1/2 turn (still no change).

Adjust it in another 1/4 turn (again no change).

Adjust it in to where the die is now fully contacting the shell holder (no change wtf).

All other measurements indicated that it was in fact sizing the case (i.e. OD near head and shoulder were both 2 thou less than what they were when I started).

Next I tried tape between the shell holder and casing to raise the case up even further.

1 layer of tape (no f'n change).

Two layers of tape (are you f'n kidding me).

About to give up and figured I'd try annealing the case and try resizing it one more time.

Guess what the next measurement was? 1.621 (10 thou bump).

Lesson learned!

I'm sure 99% of you are saying "been there, done that" but for the 1% who have not I thought I'd share.

Interesting as I have a body die for my 222 brass which I have yet to try out. I have a Grizzly anealer which I haven't tried out either. FS
 
Redding sells a set of twelve shell holders that are different heights, the case slot is in the same location but the sides of the shell holder are different heights thus allowing the case to either go farther into the die or shallower so you can then match the sholder to case head measurement to your chamber. Owning a bump die without the shell holder set is kind of like owning a wagon without a horse to pull it, you can make it work but there is a easier way to make it work well.
 
I have my body die set up to bump .002 when overcammed.

Without overcamming the press I can't get the shoulder to move at all.

It takes quite a force to move brass.

Plus I'm using 308 brass converted from 30 "oh" 6 (inside joke) so the neck walls are thicker, like 16 thou.
 
Redding's competition shell holders work for me. I can bump my shoulders back .001 once I find the right combination of die and shell holder. I have separate sizing dies if I have 2 rifles in the same caliber and I will sand the bottom of the die to get a perfect length for head-space with the appropriate height of shell-holder..
