Redding vs RCBS dies ** UPDATED **

I have always used mainly RCBS dies along with a few sets of Lee & Lyman with no problems at all. Recently I purchaced a set of Redding dies and tried to use them today only to find they won't thread into my Lyman Orangecrusher press. Upon further investigation, I find that the OD at the threaded section is about 15-20 thou. larger than other other dies I use.

They measured .869" using the locking ring to keep the calipers square to the threads.

Anyone else see this problem or have measurements they can add?

I find that hard to beleive, maybe it's just your set.

I change most of the Redding locking rings with RCBS ones because I don't like how the Redding ones hold (i.e. they don't hold on very tight) and from my experience, the RCBS lock rings are just a tiny hair larger than redding's thread pitch
 
I don't have any Redding dies so I can't tell you first hand, but Redding advertises 7/8-14, the same as both Lyman and RCBS do. Time to call their tech line.
 
I measured some of my Redding dies OD for you,
all are 0.868''

Have you tried to run a lock ring all the way up? If there is resistance wash down with WD-40
 
I have quite a few sets of Redding dies and use an Lyman Orange chrusher press, absolutely no problems with mine. Likely a bum set of dies. You could always run a threading die over the Redding die.....Ken
 
Both dies are tight, but is worse on the seating die. It goes in easy to about 2/3s in and then fetches up. It's not the press cuz it does the same when I put the die in from the top or bottom side on the press.

I have Redding, RCBS, Dillon and Lee dies. I use em interchangeably in Redding and Hornady presses and in Hornady L&L bushings too. There is absolutely nothing about Redding dies in general that would account for this. Knowing how these top end reloading outfits are, I'd be tempted to give Redding a call. You may wind up with new dies. Not that I'd bet the farm on it but I'd at least give it a try.
 
Had that problem with a set of custom .375 Ackley Dies several years ago I had from them. After a quick phone call my dies were returned and a new set were next day delivered to me. Redding had very good service desk when I dealt with them.
 
Called Redding. They said to send them back with a note. No prob.

Kinda need these dies to work as they are for my 223AI. I think I can size with a 223 Lee collet and seat with a 22/250 die till they get back.

Sure, that's what's nice about the AI's you should be able to get away with a generic neck sizer for a while anyways. It should'nt be an issue seating bullets by adjusting your 22-250 seater. My 6.5x257 doesn't even have his own bullet seater :D
