redoing a M70 Ranger

so I have this Ranger for longest times. I thought Ill sell it, since I dont need a 30-06, and its became a safe queen lately, but my hart just hurts every time I pull it out of the gunsafe, and the lates interested guy just cooled off.

so here Im thinking;
I want a barrel in smaller caliber, preferably .243 if not smaller, but not bigger
I want to get rid of the wood stock
and I want to install a detachable magazine, if posible

some stuff I can do myself, some I have to rely on gunsmith
can anyone give me an estimate of how much this may cost me, and if its doable??

for a long action with a standard bolt face your best bet for a rebarrel is the 25-06.....243 would work but you should install a shorter mag box and a different bolt stop.

Any stock for a long action push feed Model 70 will fit.

The detachable mag will be a problem...I know Winchester made some Model 70's with detachable boxes but these were Classic models...not sure if they would fit, if you could find one.
 
Ive seen push feed m70 synthetics with DM, made in the early to mid 90s

For the trouble it'd be, I'd suggest just selling the 30-06 and buying a short action 243 with a DM. And like Rembo noted, rebarreling a long action rifle to a short action cartridge is kinda ass backwards

yeah, the more I think of it the more it make sence, I just hope I can talk my other half into seeing it that way, for some reason she doesnt have problems with spending money on an upgrading of a gun but if I mention buying one she goes bonkers;)

okay, Im going to make myself sound more like a noob

detachable mag may take a back burner for now. though as I see it all it takes is finding a mag and then replacing the trigger guard (or am I wrong?)

I found an inexpensive syntetick stock, now Im very intrigued about going with a different caliber, since it seems 25-06 is the logical way, here is the question; what does "barrel blank" mean??

and if I get the stock for my 30-06 will different caliber barrel fit in it without corrections?

how complicated is the process of removing a barrel?

Barrel blank is an unturned (ie: non-threaded) barrel. It can be contoured (tapered) or not. The 'smith can turn it to match your existing barrel contour, to fit your stock, or you can modify the stock if you decide you want a thicker profile on your barrel. The barrel is placed in a special vise, clamped down (using spacers of aluminum or hardwood) very tightly, and the action is turned off with a special action wrench. It is easy to screw up a gun trying to do this at home with makeshift tools, so I would suggest you find someone who knows what they are doing. DM may be just different bottom metal, although some types require machining of the receiver. - dan

I finaly did some more research on barrel blanks last night and I came to a conclusion that it will be better left to a gunsmith, as well, this can prove more costly then Im ready for right now, so another thinkering idea is shelved, Ill just go for lighter bullets in 30-06

so the stock has to go, and seems like the only thing that I can do so far

another thing that I would like to change is the iron sight, way back when I tried to take it off, the rear sight is not a problem, the front sight is, there is a pin under it that holds it in place, is there a special trick to removig the front sight without excessive force?
 
Your M70 Ranger is a regular M70 with a less expensive stock. The front sight may be soldered on.
"...just go for lighter bullets..." 125's or 130's.
"...your best bet for a rebarrel is the..." Or the .270 Win. Likely easier to get ammo and brass for it than the .25-06. Especially in small places. Greater selection of bullets too.
Like Dan says, a barrel blank is just that. A barrel with nothing else done to it other than having a bore and rifling.

you cleared up a thing for me, I alway get confused by that "Ranger" inscription on the barrel

Im definitly going to try lighter bullets, I just cant afford to spend ~$250 + for a new barrel, though .270 looks like a winner, when I eventually get to it

regarding the sight, I dont think its soldered on, there is a small screw behind the sight, and I think I got it to wiggle quite a bit last time, will have to try again when the new stock arrives:)
 
Why don't you list it in the Exchange as a WTT ( want to trade) for a gun in a different calibre, instead of trying to sell it. You could trade it for a REM 700 SPS with the DM in .243, .7mm-08 or .270.

its an option, but not for now, I rather tinker with it, invest a bit, had that planned long time ago, and maybe some time in the future Ill post it for trade
