i want to try a load using 200gr lead bullets with gas checks at around 2000fps, 35ish grains of imr4895 should put me at 2000fps, pressure should be low,
let me know what you think

I love using 125 gr Remington Bulk PSP bullets with about 40 gr. any ball powder... lots of noise , but reduced recoil!! :D I even hunt groundhogs with this load. Tagged quite a few of them, too. Blows up REAL good!

"Blows up REAL good! "

My kind of guy! We speak the same language. Try 190 match out of a 300 Win mag @ 400 yds. Nothing left but glue on the stubble.

will the 200gr bullets damage my norc m14, i know the op rod doesnt like the heavy bullets due to the increased velocity the op rod travels at with heavy full power loads, but with the reduced load i figure it should be OK,
anybody??

Wish we could use those....

Bulk Remy 120 gr PSP / 100: $35
Sierra 168 gr Matchking / 100: $35
Hornady 168 gr HPBT Match / 100: $34
Hornady 165 gr BTSP /100: $31

So you CAN buy the cheap bulk stuff... but why when the MATCH GRADE stuff is cheaper? :D

Wowsers  It's been a long time since I bought bulk Remington 125 gr. PSP.. IIRC 500 slugs for $ 60 from Wholesale (about 1997ish)

Now how about some 110 gr (IIRC) VMAX .30 cal bullets ? :nest:

I think the heavy cast bullets would probably be OK for reduced loads, but I admit that I haven't tried it.

I've got some loads worked up using 165gr cast bullets, using various powders: IMR4350, Varget, H335, H4895 and RL7

so far I've only tested the IMR4350 and Varget. 35, 37 and 39 gr of 4350, only the 35gr load would not cycle.

31, 33 and 35gr of Varget, all cycled properly

Not sure on accuracy yet as everything has been hitting low of the target. I'll be going back out to the range this week, so I'll let you know how it turns out.

cast bullets

Lots of info on this at castboolits*.*com. try

I shot lots of the lyman loverell style 173 grain out of a TRW m14 in the '80's but have yet to try my norc. My load then was 20gr of slow magnum pistol powder for about 1800+ fps, gas checked bullet, straight lyno, various different lubes...excellent accuracy, perfect function, pennies per shot.

recoil energy and op rod

I think the concerns with heavy bullets and the op rod relate more to full loads with jacketed bullets. You mention trying 200 gr in the M14 (or the garand for that matter) and I think it's a great idea. The cast bullets are easiest to handle if kept below 2200 fps anyway. The actual energy imparted on the action would likely be less then full house 150 grainers. Lino or hardened bullets should be used for proper feed, with a polished feed ramp. There is some concern about gas checks "sticking" at the gas port but I've never had it happen. I am going to experiment with a 200gr bore rider with no gas check...looking for about 2000fps as well.

Sorry to revive this thread...
tested some 200gr cast gas checked bullets
i tested imr4895 starting at 35gr and worked down to 31gr, all functioned fine, accuracy was 3'' at 50 yards, some groups better than others, going to start to do some load development for accuracy, recoil was mild to almost nil from 35 to 31 grains, fun to shoot at closer ranges, un sure on velocity, figure 1700-1800fps, still has some power close in...
