I'm planning on using my little jungle carbine in a vintage military shoot this year but am not looking forward to firing 60+ rounds of full power ammo through a 7 1/2 lbs rifle :)

Can anyone suggest a reduced load that works for a 150 grain or preferably a 174 grain HPBT? I'm thinking of something like a 30-30 performance.

Hi ,

I do a lot of shooting with that same rifle. I can tell you that Ritchie's suggested load works like a charm and will also do a good job on whitetails. I've got some other good reduced loads in my notes that I can send you when I get home on Friday as I am away for work this week.
 
Reduced load for Lee Enfield....

I am using 206 grn. (.3115") cast bullets with gas check @ 12:1 ratio and lubed... from "MT Chambers Supply" with 18.0 gns of SR4759. Light load....accurate in my No.4 and easy on the pocketbook. Some rifles shoot cast better than factory. Ben Hunchak is in Saskatchewan....<mtchambers@skvelocity.ca>. I am still playing with this combination but am very happy with the results so far. Dave

reduced load LE#5

Years ago, I worked up (more like worked down) a minimum load using the LEE cast bullet, no gas check, 10 gr HS6, a bit of filler (kapox) to keep the powder at base and managed to get 5 inch groups at 100M. Was used mostly in sheltered range in the winter at 25M...shooting gallery, why the extra power for 25M? As cheap as can be!
The guy that sold me the LE#5, caused of the bad kick it had, looked at me with some regrets! Reloader's edge!

I found my notes, here they are;

From the Speer #11 Manual,

1- 150 gr. Sp. bullet, SR 4759 powder, min. load 21.0 gr (1613 fps), max. load 25.0 gr (1925 fps),

2- 180 gr RN (works with 174 gr bullets too), IMR 4198 powder, min. load 21.0 gr (1543 fps), max. load 25.0 gr (1839 fps),

3- 190 gr cast bullet with gas check, sized to .311 , 30.0 to 32.0 grains of IMR 4320 (1893 to 2011 fps) my personal favourite, and

4- Same cast bullet as above with 12.0 to 14.0 grains of Unique (1378 to 1500 fps) for plinking.

PS- To improve accuracy with cast bullets, you might want to check the actual nominal diameter of your barrel`s bore as Enfields have been known to vary from .310" to .314" because they were manufactured by so many different makers over such a long period of time.
