Reduced loads for 348

Anyone try reduced loads?? I have cast bulets 255gr.. 250 Barnes O's

lots of Barnes 220X's 200grX's and hornady 200gr. I am leaning to

plinkin rounds so suggestions please..I am close to Van so i can buy

any powder, bullets well that might take some doin I would prefer to

use cast thou.. It will be used in a Browning 20" barrel and a 39Win with a

24" tube..

Off to the range tomorrow I found 58gr R19 and 255gr cast very accurate

I am gonna chrony this ..it is a huntin round for sure and if I shoot more

than 20 I probably wont be able too have anymore children;) or any back

teeth

I have an original deluxe model 71 Winchester I shoot and for reduced or plinking loads, I use two different cast bullet that I get locally, a 230gr GC and a 262gr GC. I'm not in favour of using jacketed bullets at 'significantly' reduced loadings.

For jacketed I have a selection that includes the 200gr Hornady, 200gr Winchester Silvertips, 220gr Barnes originals and some 250gr Barnes originals. These I use at near maximum loadings, as listed in the manuals.

If you want, PM me your e-mail address and I'll scan some cast bullet load data I have from a couple editions of Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook. I've also done some experimenting with the cast bullets using Trail Boss but that's something I have yet to finish working on.
 
I was going to suggest Trailboss, a friend of mine is using that in his 223 with very good results. My br.in law has been trying Trailboss in a 308 with cast bullets and is looking for a mold to try the 303. Both guys seem to like this powder.
 
Dave: 8 grains of 5744 under a .350 round ball makes a real plinker load for 25-50 yard shooting. They will hold about 1/2" at 25 yards. Great grouse load and realatively quiet.

Thanks..sounds like somethin i will try, probably goin for shoulder surgery and might be off for a few months.

for the 255gr cast I use 58grR19 or 42gr H4895 how much can I go lower with the H4895??
 
You really ought to pickup the Lyman cast bullet handbook, or the 49th edition reloading manual, which shows reduced loads for some jacketed stuff. I think the new cast one is the 3rd edition, the 2nd edition has some different stuff in it also.
And check out the castboolits website.
Those will give you a better idea of powders to use and the parameters they work in.
 
I've been as low as 40 of H4895 with that bullet weight. I think Hodgon says 60 per ecnt of the max load is O.K. with that powder. Check the Hodgdon site for confirmation.
 
Test rifle M71 20" barrel 50 yd target with WLR primers

58.0 gr R19 1942fps accuracy 3" groups with alot of horizontal stringing

59.0gr R19 1993 fps accuracy 1.5" group ok

59.5gr R19 2018 fps accuracy about 1.25

Must admit i am a bit rusty!! had a little problem with the chrony and wasted several shots also i need to resize some as 2.80" does not feed in my browning very well.

All were using 255gr. cast bullets gc.

recoil was tolerable and I saw not reason not to try 60 or 60.5?? maybe a few more at 59.5 R19
might try my win 71 next time with 24" barrel
 
Beartooth makes some lightweight, 165 grian, I believe, .348 bullets. A perfect chioce for plinking, and reducing recoil. I have used them in the past with minimum loads with success. They do make the recoil significantly lighter.

Will they ship too Canada?? What gun did you use a Win or Browning??
