I have a M38 that somebody refinished the stock with a stain. It looks nice, however I would like to remove the stain and put an original finish on it. I was thinking boiled linseed or tung oil or a mix. Does anybody have an idea of what the original finish was.

My guess is something like finn wax which is blo turpentine and pine tar in rough thirds boiled together and applied hot, then polished with a dry cloth or leather.

I have several Swedes. One of them, an M96, was obviously restocked with new beech wood before release. The finish is certainly more modern than the BLO treatment - more like a medium walnut stained commercial satin poly-urethane.

see Tradex and get a new stock/used cheap. It is hard to remove stain as stain penetrates the wood. You can try soaking and scrubbing with thinners.
