My mosin stock was in awful shape when I cleaned the Cosmo off so I had to do something. Being cheap, after market stocks was out of the question. 5 coats and about 1 week and its done. Camera didn't really catch it but it has a shine to it.

It looks......naked!
Good on ya though, something I've yet to attempt.

what's funny is it started off as completely white when i stripped it, as if it was bleached. Very strange. I would have loved to had the original stock but it was such a mess, My sks is still stock and i love it..... After i cleaned the mosin with just water the Finnish came right off and before that it was coming off just by rubbing the barrel end. I had a faded mosin soaked in Cosmo with missing paint everywhere.

BLO makes it look so... so...

'Merican!

You know?

Nice job of it, from what I can tell from the pic.

Looks nice. I did my first mosin like that too, for the same reason of a flaking and scratched shellac finish.

I added some red stain and alcohol to the first 3 coats, then pure boiled linseed after. Beautiful piece of wood.

Looks awsome nice job.did you thin the first 2 coats with turpentine?

No I didn't use any thinners, I thought about it but considering you use turpentine to strip blo off I figured it would be better to do light coat and wipe the excess off.

I would have loved a stock mosin but it was far beyond damaged once I got the oil off. Sad thing is before the oil came off it looked pristine. Then as soon as a rag hit it I knew something had got under the original paint and caused it to bubble and flake off.

In person the rifle looks great. Every coat of BLO darkens in and adds shine. I would do more but its more of a practice rifle for me so no need. One day ill strip if off and do cherry red or light green stain with a clear coat when I can find a stain that I like. Till now they all seem to dark and hides the woods natural lines.

From what I can tell ,you did a fine job! I too love refinishing old milsurps when they need it and it`s in rough shape ,what you got to lose.

The boiled linseed oil is one of several great finishes I have used ,nice and easy.

Cheers
