After seeing some pictures of some other guys, nicely refinished SKS rifles, I thought that I would start a thread, so we could post our refinished Red Rifles. No bubba jobs, just wood.

I will start the thread off, by posting a picture of my 1950 Russian Refurb, that I actually don't have no more, but I think I am going to get another SKS just because I think they look great when some hard work has been put into them. Anyways here is the SKS that I refinished. This is a Laminate stock, rifle that used to have a Black Bolt.

The 1954 SKS was stripped with Circa 1850 stripper, buffed with 00 steel wool, then followed by 0000 steel wool, and then given 4 coats of Circa 1850 tung oil (1 hour between coats). It was allowed to dry a full 24 hours, buffed one last time with 0000 steel wool, and then given one final application of tung oil. It turned out very well. I am, however, inclinced to leave my SKS's original. This was the only one I "refinished" as the refurb shellac coat was butt fugly. I'm inclined to call this job more of a cleaning and oil application.

I love the look of that laminated one after you refinished it! I'm more of a fan of the darker browns and reds, but that one is exceptionally nice.

Here's a couple more. One I already posted on the other thread, the other was a "merlot" finish with clearcoat. I have one more semi-beat up Russian stock, so I'm trying to decide what to do with that one over the winter.

This stock was originally the yellow-orange varnish that came from the factory. It was stripped, sanded, and re-finished in over 25 coats of Russian Red. The stocks above look great, you guys have done amazing jobs!

I got bored one night and this is what happened to my 54 Izzy:

I love this thread! Anytime someone can make something look better/function better without having to buy it/have someone else do it is a damn good job. (home made/ back yard stuff)

I dont have anything to post(my laminated looks good the way it is), but I do like the idea of buying a used stock and trying some magic on it.

Would anyone happen to have some pictures of their refinished mosin ? or maybe a svt ? been thinking of getting one but really want to see if they can be "brought out " so to speak .

This is so nice. Its hard to believe a crappy old, oil stained, Russian hardwood stock can be made to look this nice.

These pictures make we want to get another one, only hardwood. I guess you could say that they give me hardwood.

I would love to spend the money on getting one all chromed up, so they look like the Ceremonial Russian Honour Guards. Does anyone have a picture of one of them ? I have scene them before, but don't know were.

Beaut. How did you refinish/stain it to get this finish? Looks like one of the modern laminates, like some Savages.

Its easy. I just gave the sks some tlc with various sandpapers, and stained it with some honey stain that I had left over after a deck. When it dryed, I sprayed a clearcoat and buffed the stock with some fine steel wool. It was easy, and anyone with a free evening can get these results with a laminate sks stock. This sks had a black paintef bolt also, that I stripped and buffed to a shiny silver bolt.

Refinished SVT-40

This is my SVT-40 which I refinished.
The shellac finish was completely destroyed. Just flakes here and there. It looked horrible.
I stripped it with methyl hydrate and 0000 steel wool. Sanded it starting with 100 paper and ending with 150.
Then 2 hand rubbed boiled linseed oil applications with 24hr drying between. Then 4 more applications of BLO but using 0000 steel wool between apps. to open the pores again, with 24hr drying periods between :D
