Refinished

What a score, in both a friend calling to say "Hey I gotta line on a gun for You" and not buying it from under you and the gun its self.
Nice work and the figure sure is pretty too.
Thanks for sharing and Waidmanns Heil.

Yes agreed. He’s put me onto some real beauties. I met him when I bought a gun off him from here. He since has become a member of our gun club, hunted bears a couple times and became a family friend.

That’s a very nice piece of American walnut and from here it certainly looks like you did it justice. Being a Remington, the original finish of this era was likely shiny like this, only a plastic based finish of some sort.

Wow is all I really have! Absolutely stunning. Went to a great guy. Beauty job on the refinish as well. Retirement opportunities abound

This butt is so dense it actually negatively affects the balance imo. Maybe heavier scope mounts might help. Or a heavier barrel....

A 1" spade bit up the butt(of the rifle) can really help with balance.
Have your wife watch from the side to help line everything up. That way you will have someone to yell at, or a shoulder to cry on, if you punch out the side of the the stock

A jig can be made from 3/4" or 1" ID tube that attaches to the pad holes for just this. It really helps align the bit. Once the spade is into the wood, split halves are inserted into the tube with space for the diameter of the bit in the middle. It then becomes very difficult to get that bit to walk. It certainly reduces the stress when drilling a really nice/expensive stock.

That's a ridiculous piece of wood, even for the Remington Custom Shop. I doubt that you could get anything half that good at most manufacturers these days.

Refinished an old Remington 725 243 last week. No fancy wood figure surprises hiding under the original finish but I think it turned out pretty nice

Nice work Buck! Are you using the antique oil still?

I put a coat of sealer on my custom build a couple weeks ago, will start the wet sanding process this weekend, excited to be packing fancy walnut in the mountains this year.

Thanks. Yes minwax antique oil is what I have found to be the easiest to work with.
Look forward to seeing your refinished rifle draped over a ram.
