I have 870 wood from 1987 I assume it is Birch.

My question:

I have taken all of the old finish off but I want a dark and matte finish.

Can I stain the stock darker and then rub in Tru-oil or Tung oil? Or will that make the stain run and just make a mess?

Thanks for any help, I had DA grizzly synthetic stocks on the gun but they feel like crap compared to the wood and are heavier. The original wood was TremClad Finished back in the early 90's.

I have refinished several 870 stocks and forends with tru-oil and I have never had a problem with the stain running. Just choose the stain you want and then let it dry properly before appling the tru-oil coats. If you are looking for more of a matte or satin finish you can apply the stock sheen/conditioner once the tru-oil has had time to dry properly. I have had some great results with these products.

I've used stains with tru-oil and had no problems. Birch sometimes has a funny grain to it so you might want to wet it down to get an idea of what it will look like.

Well I bought Double boiled Linseed oil instead. Could not find Tru-oil and Tung oil was 10 bucks more.

I take it the only difference is going to be drying times. Linseed oil says 24 hours between coats.

Also says you should thin it with paint thinner 2 parts oil 1 part thinner.

Should I do that or just use strait oil?

Thinner, ie can use mineral oil will allow the initial coats of oil to work deeper into the wood.
