You can try just dulling down the finish with 4ought steel wool. I stripped one with circa 1850 once and then sanded and refinished with tung oil. The circa 1850 wasn’t great in it but it worked eventually. Took lots of sanding. Good luck.
Me too. Sadly disappointed with 1850 finish.
Because obviously not the same Danish oil I used three decades ago. A top coat of Spar Helmsman saved my day.
Instead a super shiny, came out semi-gloss ( like Minwax Tung Oil) and a touch darker overall.
Closest to my desired expectations.
I am just guessing here, but I suspect the 1850 underneath affected the Spar finish to a degree.
Or vice versa.
Edit: I have a red pine box that has multiple coats, Spar Helmsman & it just keeps on getting shinier than the Bluenose 2 on a sunny Canada Day. Lol
