Ok so i have this cooey i picked up a few years ago for $80 and it's sorta been my beater and has accumulated more than a few scars. I was wondering how simple it would be to refinish it? Would it simply be a matter of sanding off the current varnish dust it off and oil it? I've used tongue oil alot recently and was wonderin if that would work as a finish. Any advice as to sandpaper grit type of oil etc would be greatly appreciated.

You can use that, It takes many many coats though.
Tru oil would be faster.
a good wood scraper is a fast way to get to new wood
use a light touch and then sand to 180 grit if you put on stain
if it is a birch stock, or 220 or 280 if no stain.
If you don't want to smooth it all out, just strip and finish with
no sanding. If you sand one place, you have to do it all as the color
will not match.
Good luck
