Through good deals, I have ended up purchasing 4 all black handguns....
I'm the kind of guy that likes to be different, i'd like my guns to stand out in a crowd.....
What are some good options for refinishing? Really, i'd like to do it myself, cause again, that's who i am.....
I was thinking for a winter project to try the products at http: //armacoat.net/
I have also heard good luck with kyrlon(sp?) paint.....?
Please share your experiences, and if possible pictures of your refinishing projects....
Oh, i was also thinking of wrapping my P22 in Carbon Fibre, i was a really cool picture of that.......
Thanks,
Rob

I took my Springfeild Armory Defender model 1911A1 from this:

I did all the work myself, in my basement using a Caswell DIY electroless nickel plating kit.

If you want to plate anything, there are several things you really need to pay attention to:

1. Surface preparation. Whatever finish texture your pistol has before you plate it, is the same as the finish texture you will have after plating it. Plating will not fill in scratches, or give a mirror finish to bead blasted parts.
2. THOROUGH degreasing. Use brake cleaner followed by a caustic lye based degreaser and sufficient rinsing in distilled water. Never use tap water for any stages of the plating process.
3. Temperature control. Bring your solution to the temperature sepcified by the kit instructions. It helps if you pre-heat the parts to be plated to the working temperature of the chemistry.
4. Care for your chemistry. Start new jobs with new solutions if you want a high-gloss, bright finish. Thoroughly degrease and rinse parts prior to plating. Do not use tap water, only steam distilled water.

ok, I am really interested in this process now. I am in the process of purchesing a Norinco 1911 and I would love to have it nickle plated. Does it hold up well? What are those grips on the refinished model?

The nickel plating on my pistol looks the same as it did coming out of the plating solution. This is after about 1200 rds. The grips are Pachmayr American Legends. They're pretty, but the pewter medallions have gone AWOL, so I'm thinking of switching back to Hougues.
