Refinishing a Marlin

I started with a plain Marlin 30as, pretty dinged up, and it had an ugly birch stock. It also has a super smooth action, a great trigger and is a really good shooter, so I thought it was a good candidate for a makeover.

Here is how it started:

I always like blonde wood on rifles, It's just too bad the birch doesn't have a nicer grain. I also added a Leupold VXII 1x4 on Leupold one piece base and rings.

This is how it looks now:

I used Minwax Wood Finish Stain 210b, and satin Minwax Polyurethane.

I'm working on the exact same rifle right now a 30AS....should getter back together in a week or so.
I was lucky enough to score one in almost new shape to turn into my Goto deer rifle.....too many collectible ones to bounce around in the truck or strap to the quad. This one will serve my needs fine....deer don't care about walnut or the lack of it anyways.

These 30AS Marlins are a steal at the prices they go for...but keep it to yourself

Great workmanship. I prefer darker, more reddish wood on my rifles. But that ain't my rifle!
The refinish really highlighted what grain there is in that stock, I must say. The semi-matte finish is nice too.

What kind of scope base did you put on? I put a Weaver base on and the two scopes I tried both still shot three feet high at 100 yards maxxed out on the dial, so I put a receiver sight on.

I bought the butt stock off a CGN member and just scrubbed the forend with soap and water, then treated both with tung/teak oil.

Got mine back together...I really like the look of those early button mag tubed 71 sporting rifles so I did that to mine...plus it slides into my scabbard abit better It still holds 3 rounds in the tube, add one in the chamber and 4 rounds is plenty.

Threw on a Leupold 1-4 in some Talley rings....removed the belly out of the forestock and darkened up the birch a fair bit. Added the newer A forecap with the stud built into it.

Should work well for my beater, truck, quad, and gp knockabout rifle ! Plus my son will be chasing Big Game in two more seasons so it'll be a good solid rifle for him !
