Refinishing a VZ?

Has anyone stripped the original (fugly, IMHO) finish off a VZ and reblued it? I think it would make the rifle look much nicer this way.

If you have, care to share any pics? :)

I'm planning on doing mine eventually.... sandblast and GunKote it in matte black!

The current finish is actually paint, so I don't think you'll be able to blue it even after stripping...

The ugly color is whats keeping me back right now, I don't have the expertise to refinish it myself (nor the facilities). Black would definately be the way to go, imo.... if only someone would start making some solid plastic 74 style furniture for it.

Why would you think that?

What I meant was I don't think the metal underneath is 'blueable' for a do it yourself job... is it? Do all types of steel take bluing well? To be honest, I have no idea...

I just figured if it was possible, they would have blued them originally instead of paint no?

Either way, my only hesitation to re-painting is the fact that it won't really look or be a milsurp anymore... kinda like a bubba'd Lee Enfield!

What about Dura Coat? I have heard that a lot of guys refinish their AR's using this and that it is very hardy.

I think with ANY refinish, you'd need to at least sandblast/beadblast... and that's my issue... I don't have one, or know anyone with one (sandblaster).

I don't know if I'd let a local body shops take my gun for a few days either! Any Calgary Nutz wanna lend me their shop for a few hours?

GunKote works extremely well (re-painted my CQ311 with it), but I've heard good things about the DuraCoat/Armacoat products as well... no baking required with those I believe...

I'm keeping the paint on mine. IMO paint is WAY better than metal stainers for people that don't clean their guns incessantly.

I'm keeping mine too. That ain't just ordinary paint, it's a tough finish, I have seen it on several Czech military weapons.

The only thing that I was not happy with was the lack of finish on the stocks. When this is given a bit of love it makes the rifle look a lot more refined. I think:)
