refinishing and serial number?

So I recently bought an 870 for a project. I want to re finish it but if I do the serial number will not be visible. It is very worn as it is and very shallow. Any issue covering it up as it is not registered or g=do I have to leave it? Any help is appreciated.

If it was me I wouldn’t be too concerned about it, you’re just refinishing it. You’re not grinding it off or trying to intentionally remove it, if you’re sending it out to get coated let them know you’re concerned about it being hard to see. If you’re coating it yourself try to keep the coating thin over the numbers.

Refinishing with Bluing? if you are cold blueing you will not remove the numbers at all.

I wouldn't loose sleep over it, i have a bunch of older rifles with no serials on them... Back when the long gun registry was out, the cfo sent me some stickers with a serial number on them, I just laughed and put the envelope in the cabinet
