The checkering on the forend and grip is "proud" (is raised above the rest of the stock). When refinishing doesn't the paint fill the checkering and blur it out? So, is it better to file the checkering flush, fill and sand or should I just spray over the checkering?

In my experience, the checkering is really not affected unless there's lots of paint laid down. It all depends on what you want it to look like when you're finished so I think it would be up to you if you want to sand it or not. The checkering is kinda functional and it might be worth leaving alone IMO.

use a triangular fine file....... keeping with the checkering...... tedious but it works....... I just paint over it.... turns out fine.
