Well....got bored again. Yanked the RC K98 out of cabinet and overhauled the wood. BEFORE anyone jumps on this the stock has NO markings on it anywhere other then serial and was in rough shape. I cant get over the difference as it started out freaking disaster as Tung Oil is a nightmare to get off. Kinda like trying to wipe spilled hair gel up with a plastic bag it aint happening haha. Anyways got all the old ####ty dark color off and putting it to original coating of linseed oil. No varnish No stain. Ill be posting pics as i go. The wood came out to a very nice color. I know this is just a RC K98 but still...people need to look at the history if that. They were captured for a reason by some means who knows and even though they are miss matched that's still a part of history how it was done. This rifle has had tons of rounds thru it I only wish it could talk.

The RC has as much "history" as any other K98 including what are alleged to be Vet Bringback's, without the story that Grandad seized it from the hands of a dying Hitler. Replacing the finish on an RC alters that history as much as it does on any K98 and its value as well.
As for the finish, there have been many threads on refinishing RC's, and no-one here has been shocked or taunted by what anyone did to their "non-collectible" RC, as it's their property to treat as they see fit.
Good for you in removing what sounds like a terrible choice (Tung Oil?) and at least bringing the appearance back close to original.

I did mine with linseed as well...came out a really nice red colour. At first it was very dark....so I put it outside in a garbage bag and let the sun bake the oil into the wood. Looks great...also scrubbed the rust out of the bore...despite damaging the history

I used to care about people fixing RCs up but now I don’t. Have at it. Just don’t get tired of it in 6 months and want the same money. It probably looks better but technically is bubba’d. Haha.

LOL I knew people would jump at this hahaha. Yes it was quite dark and NO markings other then serial stamped on it. It was rough and i mean rough before. Even had small slivers of wood sticking up and if u ran your hand the right way down it they would bite you. So yes its a huge improvement. Pics are coming folks. just did the first coat of BLO now.
The rifle has history from the day it was made til the day it turns to dust, your just a single step in all that. If you want to see a original k98 go to a museum. Its your rifle your rules. Besides I'm holding onto my RC to see if it gains value when it becomes a Chinese Capture when they take over the world. At what point does the capture or transfer of ownership cease to be its destiny.
I should also mention that the metal on this gun was completely 100% restored also GASSSSP yes for all you haters i took off that #### Russian black tar paint i call it and reblued entire gun which looks a hell of a lot better. It was a lot of work to remove whatever coating they had on it. The finish they used was dull...thick and nasty. Ill post pics of the entire thing once wood is done and i put her back together. I also have NO plans on selling this gun ever and thats also the other reason why i refinished it knowing a lot of people do not like the altering of these guns or any guns for that matter. I think i might have pics already posted of this gun with metal refinished on here in another thread somewhere.
As a student of history (aren't many of us?), it depends on what you deem to be history. The fact is that a RC rifle is simply a collection of parts of other 'historical' rifles of WW2. It indeed has 'history' but perhaps not the type of history that excites many such as an all original rifle that stormed the streets of Stalingrad. The RC has a postwar Soviet story and in accepting that, it absolutely has historical value. Every splinter of that rifle has a story and that story is not finished yet (no pun intended).
I should also add that I agree that people can do to their rifles what they wish. But we should be mindful of what we are doing. There was a time when sporterizing Enfields was not looked down upon.
