refinishing stock with checkering & refinish

Have a old mauser that I would like to sand down the stock and refinish, however there is some checkering. How do I get around the checkering without sanding in all to hell?

Also would like to redo the metal. As this is my hunting rifle would like a parkerized finish. Does anyone know someone that can do this especially in the GTA as that is where I am located. Any idea on the price.

Protecting checkering

Apply masking tape over the checkering. Force the tape into the outer edge or border of the pattern with your finger nail or a popsicle stick sharpened to a V edge. Carefully trim excess tape with an X-Acto knife. Now, sand very carefully with finer paper anytime you are close to the tape so you don't reduce the standing wood height appreciably. If the tape is still intact after sanding leave it there when you refinish or replace it. Finally remove the tape, point up the old checkering and work a few coats of dilute finish into the checkering without leaving any that is not absorbed into the wood.
 
very good tip stocker but 2 more things to remember.
1.sand with the grain of wood!
2.if this going to be your hunting rifle i would seriuosly consider de-wiskering the stock. This process involves moistening the stock and then quick drying it. Resanding it with 000 steel wool until all wiskers are gone then doing again and again. Then you can apply finish. If you don't do this you might find after you use the gun and it gets wet then dries, it will have a very rough feel to it as the "whiskers" stand up.
Just my 2 cents.
