I've got two of them and prefer them to the tube types because they are smaller and lighter. Don't know if ambient light could be an issue, but it's certainly no problem in the covered bays of my range.
In general I suppose you get what you pay for, but I have to say I've had really good results with my el cheapos. Got them both from eBay for about $18 each. Both shipped from Hong Kong.
One of them is 3 years old, still going strong and only on its second battery. They don't wander off zero and generally work just fine. They are mounted on .22 pistols. I don't know if a larger calibre with more recoil would affect them.
If nothing else, this is a way to get some red dot experience with very little downside financial risk.
