refurb markings for sks

I just purchesed a sks. the place i bought it from said it was a refurb but i didnt notice and of the signs of a refurb such as the ###x's over the serial number or the box with the slash is there any im missing ill put up pics when i get it the store couldn't release it to me today as the computers were out at the cfo office in winnipeg

No big deal, the refurbs are generally in better shape and shoot better than the non-refurbs. If you're looking for a collectors SKS, then you should educate yourself a little more about them . The ###'d over numbers is a very obvious sign as well as others. My best shooter is a 53 Tula refurb, and it still doesn't shoot as well as my Buddy's painted bolt 50 Tula.

You seemed to have some concern in your original post about being a refurb?? Nevertheless, the only SKS that are new are Chinese consumer models and a recent batch of unissued Chinese military rifles from Marstar. Everything else is used and rebuilt. Non rebuilt SKS is quite rare and collectible, but you wouldn't want one for a shooter and would pay many times more for it that what you just paid for your refurb.

Look at the top of the clean rod. There may be a diamond with or without a slash through it.

As others have said, refurbs make fine shooters and are often in better overall condition than non-refurbs.

Sometimes there is a refurb mark on the top of the receiver cover... could be a diamond, a diamond with a slash "/" through it, and box with a slash or "x" in it, or it could just be a "/". So many variations. See curtton's excellent Russian SKS FAQ sticky for details.

thanks the only markings i noticed on the reciver cover other then the date, serial number and the tula star was a i with a u on top of it i didnt know if that was a refurb stamp or not

after reading over curttons thread im pretty sure its a refurb as it has a black painted bayonet

Mine didn't have a typical refurb stamp either:

Not all receivers are stamped with factory refurb markings, but nor does it mean that is the original receiver for that rifle. Lots of stuff has been ground off for new numbers and markings.
