*Regimental Enfields*

My great great uncle and namesake was in the 27th untill his death at third passchedale, Nov. 7 1917... I would literally give a kidney for a 27th Batt. SMLE. You are lucky to have a treasure like that!

Do you need a spare kidney or lung?:D

If you read carefully this is only speculative. There seems plenty of circumstantial evidence, but it would be nice to confirm this somehow. Keep in mind also, you might want a 27 SMLE but this is a .22 caliber trainer with a Ross rear sight.

No I don't need a kidney or lung. I might trade for another Enfield trainer however!

Edit: you wouldn't happen to have a relative with the initals RG? Thought I would ask!

Canadian unit marked 1896 Long-Lee

Owned this one several years now. It's M&D marked and I'm understanding the 30th Might have been a Militia unit in Guelph or Kitchener/Waterloo area arround the turn of the century. Also I see BC had a 30th Horse regiment prior to th Great war. Any thoughts?

I've got three publications on order, if anyone requires information I will look it up for you, all I ask is that you share some pics. :D Here are the three books if anyone else is interested:

Here's a 1916 Ross MKIII from my collection issued to the 50th Gordon Highlanders of Canada that was raised right here in Victoria around 1913. Became part of the 16th Battalion CEF along with the 88th Regiment.

Actually, I would think it would be the 8th Princess Louise Hussars.

Oh it could be, I'm just going with what it says in the book I referenced. Who knows for sure, old Skennerton could be wrong! ;) And the "8" sure does give me doubts.

PLH could also mean: Punjab Light Horse (India), Pretoria Light Horse (South Africa), Pietersburg Light Horse (South Africa)

*Edited to add The Broad Arrow specifies that the 8th Hussars should simply be marked 8H.*

Lots of nice Enfields (and Ross) here, but I'll bet I've got the only British regimentally-marked Mannlicher M.88. Given to the Italians as war reparations in 1919, sent to Abyssinia to arm the Colonial forces there (AOI), captured by the British, rebuilt at Kirklee Arsenal in India (K broad arrow A) and then issued to native 7th Guard Company in Somalia (7GC)

Also, here's the tang on my 1896 BSA MLE Mk.I (MD marked). 6TH, just like englishman.ca's. I'm not sure what that means. Please ignore the ugly chair I balanced it on.

Nyles,

Not a sure thing, but your buttplate is likely a replacement on that butt stock looking by the way it fits the inletting. Plus it is not likely that a BSA butt would have left the factory with a LSA butt plate.

What am I suggesting? Nothing actualy, but note that LSA inspector 23 put his mark on both yours and mine. My LSA butt on which the butplate fits the inletting like it has always been there, has DC marked in left side of butt. Not DC in a diamond, but just two seperate characters. Right side has London roundel and below is Mk.I grade 1.

Nice chair, retro is back in.

The thought actually did occur to me, though I did forget to mention the whole butt is an LSA replacement, it has an LSA cartouche. Of course that doesn't mean the plate isn't a replacement as well.

This is the marking on the buttplate of my Snider-Enfield MKII**. Anybody have any insight into what it means? I had not really given it a whole lot of consideration until this thread.
Thanks!
