Registering a non-Registered US Pistol?

One of my family members has a beautiful civil war black powder .45 that he bought from the states years ago. He would shoot it up at the farm but since that was sold a few years ago it hasn't gotten any use & he isn't interested in getting his FAC.

If I bought that gun would it be difficult to register, or would I run into any legal troubles?

If its civil war its an antique and doesnt need to be registered.

You also have to PROVE it is not a replica or a fake. (fake being a replica made to look old)

Or quietly sell it to someone who has another farm so it can happily live out the rest of it's life. I can help you with that.

I believe it is a replica.
Sounds like it will be more trouble than it is worth.
