Registering an AR as a pistol vs a rifle

Yes. But why bother with regulatory changes when legislation is going to be introduced soon.

Because legislation takes time and can be defeated in parliament by delay or by votes.

Because regulatory changes are quicker to make.

Because magazine capacity is already controlled by way of regulation in the firearms act.

Because the RCMP can change their opinion on what makes a magazine legal under the current laws already leaving the blame on them and out of the politicians hands who use the RCMP lab as a scapegoat for liberal dirty work.

You raise some interesting points re: legislation vs regulation. This government hasn't been very good at advancing most of its legislative agenda, thankfully if you ask me (like electoral reform, pot, etc.). But in order to "undo" the Conservatives' changes (like no paper ATT) I'm assuming we can expect a Bill to be tabled soon which means legislation.

So my original question remains about re-registering an AR as a pistol. Are there any criteria (barrel or stock length)? Is this totally up to the whim of the CFO in your area?

very good question, say an ordinary 16 inch AR with a folding stock, could that be a pistol?

Classification is not up to the whim of a CFO. Decided at the federal level.

i dont think its logistically possible for them to claw back all the AR's in Canada.
would be interesting to know the number of them, but could you imagine?
that would deplete the RCMP coffers trying to buy all those back.

but this post does raise a interesting question..... at what point or IS there a point when a AR is or should be reclassified as a pistol?
i ask this because i just made a 7.5" CCS and i didnt think anything about it because either way its a restricted - restricted rifle/restricted pistol - so i didnt even consider there to be a difference.
but now that its sitting in my safe should i call the CFO and have it changed over to a pistol?

is there a OAL issue on the books that helps direct us on this?

so - if i have 3 stripped AR's lowers can i just call the CFO and ask to have one reclassified as a pistol?
but once that is done it cant be reversed from what i understand?

very interesting topic.

I've been curious about registering an AR as a pistol as well so that I could take a shorter barrelled (7.5, 10.5) down to the States for matches where we need a PDW without it being considered an SBR. I figured I'd register a lower as a pistol and put a Sig brace on it and could then bring that lower with a shorty upper down south...

Something to keep in mind with the crazy prohib laws:

If you have your 12(6) you can take your prohib pistol to the range and shoot it.

But, even if you do have your 12(3) and your 12(5) you CANNOT take your prohib rifle to the range and shoot it.

Makes sense to have at least 1 AR lower registered as a pistol, so if they prohibit the AR platform, your "pistol" will still be good to go to the range and shoot, but not so for any AR rifle...

If they prohib the AR platform a pistol registered receiver will be prphibited the same way as the rifle.
