Registering an older pistol

I noticed on the RCMP site that there is an area to do this online.
I have been offered a handgun because the owner found it in his house and does not want it and will either give it to the police or me.
This is a target shooting type .22 he says.
What is the procedure for this or should I just let sleeping dogs, well you know sleep?
Don't want to get me or the other person in trouble.

as of last year, it was a pretty straight forward call to the CFC, they even verify over the phone if you can provide the make, model, caliber and barrel lenght. someone whos done it more recently may chime in.

FYI, if the pistol is prohibited, they'll send someone over to pick it up, so make sure it meets the required barrel lenght.
 
Make sure you have the proper license for the pistol and give the CFC a call. They should give you a short term ATT to take the pistol to a verifier to make sure all is well. Then, they will usually run a trace on the information to make sure the firearm wasn't previously registered, in Canada or the US.

This could take several weeks or longer.

They may request you take the firearm to a safe storage facility, like the local police station or the verifier.

Usually, it just takes time.

Usually, they will question you and the person who gives you the pistol as to where it came from and how long ago.

Unless, it was stolen, usually not a problem.

Sometimes, people didn't upgrade their registrations in 1995. In some cases, the registrations were completely lost. Often as not, they were just copied somewhere in a database, waiting for something like this to happen. As I said, usually not a problem.
 
My father had an old enfield .38 and let his license expire years ago...
I phoned the CFC and explained that i had a license and wanted to take possesion of it which i did after the transfer. Had no problem.
I think theyre more interested in having a licensed person have proper possesion than anything else.
Hopefully the owner has the regs, or it may be difficult, the Red horsemen may want it then...

I did the same thing with my Dads .38 Webley,No problems
 
it's kind of a sore subject because if he doesn't have a PAL to legally possess that handgun a peace officer can charge him with unlawful possession of that handgun. also during the transfer process if they want to they can charge him with the same thing but most likely won't. My grandfather recently transferred two handguns to me and I was worried about this because his PAL had expired and he never renewed it. so for 3 years he was in unlawful possession of those two handguns but I did the transfer over the phone to transfer them to me and didn't have any problems.
