Any of you guys ever register a handgun that has never been registered? Is it pretty straight forward or is it a bureaucratic nightmare?
I would like to buy an old semi auto pistol(not a prohib) but don't want to get into a big racket either. It shouldn't be difficult assuming the gun wasn't registered years ago and reported stolen. In that case you would lose it in a hurry plus the money spent to purchase it. Anyone have any experiences doing this?

Can you not make that a condition before purchasing? That they first register it, then reimburse them if there is a cost for that? Or Pay half now and half after it has passed registration?

Sorry, just thinking aloud.

My experience is that if it was registered at one time, like the old green slips then it should be okay. Never registered I am not sure, be interesting to hear what folks have to say!

Prohibs never.....

Call and ask for a tech, tell them you want to register a never registered gun. Having the gun in front of you with a tape measure helps. Depending on the gun they may ask for proof marks or other identifying marks. If the gun comes up never registered they will give you an frt no. and a technicians pin no. Then you go online and register it, and should get your paperwork in a couple of weeks. If there is any discrepancies, they may require you to physically take it to a verifier. If it comes up stolen or registered to someone else, then things get more complicated.

and no one in trench coats and knee high boots shows up asking why it was never registered and under who's bed its been hiding for the last 70 years???

interesting.

It is straightforward because the gestapo are always happy to add another gun to the confiscation list.

as long as the gun hasn't been stolen, or used in a crime it shouldn't be a problem just paperwork to fill out.

+1, been my experience too.

interesting.

As noted, they are ecstatic to add another gun to the confiscation list. The powers that be wouldn't do anything to discourage people from adding visibility to a previously unaccounted for firearm.

I have registered "never registered" guns several times. Just the usual phone call, plus the extra step of getting it verified, also done on the phone or by computer.

The feds seem to be happy to get the gun onto their books.

Thanks for the feedback. It is a WW2 vet bringback so I am fairly confident it has never been registered. As some of you have said, I am sure the government would rather register them than have them remain in circulation unrecorded.

I have found that the vet bring backs were registered under the old system where each gun was typed on to a white paper form. My first was done that way.

You might find they can find it in the old registry. If they do, they will want the owner to sign off on it.

If it is a "common" gun that has a FRT # for it, no problem, if not ,it will to be done by a verifier.
not a 4 inch luger I hope.
