I have been asked a question I cannot answer. If someone has an unregistered restricted handgun can it be registered and made legal? My answer was "NO". I have now gotten cold feet about my answer. Am I correct?

Yes, you can but be sure of:
A- where it came from (ie: a family member etc.)
B- that the barrel length is legal for you. Unless you have 12.6 on your PAL= no less than 105mm.

I have done it successfully in the past with no problem at all.

Some will chime in with "what gun" or to that effect but if you really want to use it then register it.

PM me if you want details of what I had to do.

An unregistered restricted handgun can be registered without difficulty. I have done it. You contact the rcmpon the phone and tell them you want to register an unregistered handgun. They will turn you over to a verifier (make sure you have all the details and the handgun in fornt of you. They will ask you some questions about make model barrel length etc, and sometimes about proof marks. Once that is done they will give you an frt no and the verifiers password. You then register it on line.

How do you know it was never registered before?

do not call the "RCMP" about it unless you want a Tactical Team at your door...

politely phone the canadian firearms center and ask them to give you the phone numbers for your local verifiers to have a restricted firearm verified, fill out the paperwork and send it in. if you want to be quicker about it you can even do it online if your registered for online access.

the form you want to fill out is here...

No, calling is much quicker. Just have the gun with you and a tape measure. The ones I have done were never seen by a "verifier", by picture or in person....

Dantforth is in Ontario. I would not call the the CFC about it, let alone sit with it in my lap for when the Run-and-Gun boys show up.

Alberta is not Ontario is what I'm trying to say here.

Talking straight to Miramachi with this stuff. Province doesn't matter..

Approval is a federal thing. How long the paperwork takes may be a provincial issue.

I'm in Ontario, again no issues. In fact the woman I was talking to was very friendly, and gave me manufacturing dates and where it was manufactured. Remember they would rather have a registered handgun than an unregistered one.

I am still giggling. I see that everone assumes that I have the firearm and that it is mine. I even went back to my post and re-read it to see if I had insinuated the incorrect thing. I do appreciate all of the input here and the honest opinions given by gunnuters. This is only a touchy business when you deal with those who don't know the law or the correct preocedures. Thanks to all. Dave
