I live in niagara and have bow hunted around home for more than 20 years. I bow hunted for moose up north for about 10 years. I have rifle hunted deer up north for 15 years or more. I have read the regs front to back and maybe I'm just missing it, but for the life of me I can't figure out where I can use a rifle around southern Ontario. As I said I have only bow hunted around here for deer. I have a friend who hunts coyote near Font Hill, I asked him if he bowhunted for them and he said " no, I use my .204 ruger". I did'nt think you could use a rifle around here, but maybe for varmints? I have permission to hunt a chunk of land in 89b. Can I use a rifle out there, or is it bow only with a controlled shotgun muzzle loader hunt. I here stories of people hunting coyotes in stevensville and niagara on the lake with rifles but don't know if that is only allowed for coyotes or can you hunt deer too. I'm pretty sure zone 88 is bow only accross the board. Basically I am asking where is the closest wmu that I can use a rifle for deer? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You can use a rifle almost anywhere in southern ON for small game hunting. Some portions are restricted to .270 and smaller. These will be listed in the small game section (coyotes fall under small game).

Deer: Just look up deer rifle seasons for the WMU you're interested in. Without looking at a map I'd say draw a line roughly from Owen Sound to Orillia to Cornwall and say anywhere north of that you are good to go with rifles.

Yote hunting and deer are different. Need to check the by laws but you should be ok to yote hunt in 89b. You also need to check the discharge by laws for yotes. For deer just check the wmu that allow slug guns and ml.

I can't understand why I can use a rifle for small game but there is no rifle season for deer. I guess that goes along with caliber restriction. I can use my .264 win mag. but can't use a 30-30. Which one will travel farther? I am familiar with the bow seasons and controlled shot gun and muzzle loader hunts. It blows my mind that I can rifle hunt for coyotes 5 min. from my house but can only bowhunt for deer.

please note , you cannot use a 270 win or shortmag in southern districts for small game . the restriction is .275 caliber or less. A 270 win or shortmag is .277 caliber . please learn the rules ,some co's will let it go but if your charged your up :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: creek.reason im telling you is that a buddy showed up to hunt coyotes with a brand new tika in 270win that he was sold at a big chain store as the ultimate coyote rig, after a warning from a co he took a strip off of the guy at the sales counter and ended up with a 243win.

I'm in Bradford (wmu 77c) and there is only bow season. Unless you are involved in a controlled hunt then and only then are you allowed to use a shotgun, rifle or muzzleloader. So it dosent matter what caliber you use, because your not allowed to hunt deer with guns in my area. Maybe it's the same in your wmu.

I am quite sure that you are incorrect.

270 is ok.

Over that is not.

The regulations read:
"A person hunting small game may not carry or use a rifle of greater calibre than a .275-calibre rife..."
So it depends on whether the CO of the day wants to define "calibre" as bore diameter, before the grooves are cut, or groove diameter.

If it's bore diameter, then any 7mm is legal, since they all start out with .275" bores.

I have no idea where you would go to get a definitive legal opinion on this.

I agree.

Edit ti add. A .270 WSM would also be legal, same bullet diameter. The caliber restriction is on bore diameter not groove diameter.

x3

you use what's stamped on the barrel, not what your micrometer says. both the .270 and .270 wsm are legal for small game in .275 and under area's.

it makes little sense that someone would receive a fine for using a gun labeled ".270" in a .275 and under area. that's like getting a speeding ticket for going 10 km/h below the speed limit....
