Reindexing the M14 barrels - STEP 1

Laz... a lieberal? That's funny! :D

Hey Laz... thanks for the levity and the suggestions about the impact wrench/screwdriver. I have recently been successful at removing 2 (yeah, two of them) &%#@%&(*) set screws from a Poly and a Norc M14. Life is good.

I applied the techniques shown to me by some master craftsmen at a secret armory. I first selected the correct screwdriver (Chapman set or Wheeler set will do) bit. I was advised to select the bit on it's ability to fit the width of the slot and also be able to 'stand' up unsupported in that slot (almost a snug, wedge like fit). Then I was told to tighten and loosen that &^%$@ set screw along with some Kano Kroil penetrating oil (WD40 works also). Then after wiggling progressively back and forward, increase the distance (that's a linear measurement isn't it?) or tangential rotation as the screw loosens up. This technique worked for all of them and my M14's. :D Life is good.

Hope it works for you!

We luv ya , Lazarus2009 ! :)

Nice input! I look forward to the next step!

To remove my screws (2 norcs) I first weakened the staking on the screw by punching it a little, then the fun began... I used a cheep flat blade bit that fitted with a bit a force then I used a hitachi 18V hammer drill (lightweight and powerful); the damned bit snaped immediatly, but afterwards what was left of the bit fitted perfectly in the screw slot and being shorter, got stronger and I removed both screws effortlessly!

If anyone has a problem with one of our esteemed regulars "sharing experience and knowledge" in this forum, perhaps they should spend their CGN time elsewhere. Perhaps they don't "get" what we do here - and you know what? That's fine. But please don't leave disrespectful brain dumps for others to clean up. Most CGN members in this forum have benefited from the solid contributions LAZ (and others) make to the SAFE use and maintenance of our battle rifles. I certainly have, and thank LAZ and others for sharing with the M14 community.

Thanks for the info Laz! One thing though - the BM59 receiver is NOT similar to an M14, but is rather a modified Garand frame, that uses a detachable mag.
