Hi,

I will be bedding an action using Marine-Tex. What can I use as release agent. I had heard paste floow wax, but I can't find any anywhere. Would car paste wax work? I was also thinking of wrapping thae action wiyh saran wrap. Any help woud be appreciated.

See "release agent in a pinch " thread for more. I use miniwax from Home Depot , a can of which could do a 100 jobs, others use Kiwi neutral shoe polish ( I have never used it but many swear by it). I believe you should avoid waxes with silicone as it has been reported to weaken the epoxy, others with a chemistry background could answer that for sure. Wrapping in plastic wrap would make too thick of a barrier and decrease the accuracy of the rifle/ stock fit. Good luck.

PAM cooking spray works but sometimes the resin cannot be applied STRAIGHT to the treated metal (barreled action) surface with the intention of reducing the likelihood of air bubbles. :D

I found Pam too oily and would not use it again. I liked the Kiwi polish and prefer that to the release agent I got with a Brownells kit.

i just used car paste wax with exceptional results. two coats buffed out and you can see tooling marks in the bedding! did two guns in two days with it and both times it worked flawlessly. once it's buffed out it looks like there's nothing on there but there is.

I have tested Kiwi and if you apply it properly it seems to work well. The original question was "release agent substitute". Why?? Just buy real release agent! I use Synlube 531 which is readily available so why reinvent the wheel? We buy it from Composites Canada in Toronto by mail. Email me and I will give you contact info but if you do a search you will find them on the web.
