What do you guys use for release agents while bedding your actions? I've heard of guys using
1. Silicone spray
2. Pam cooking spray
3. Simonize car wax
4. Crisco
5. Grease
6. WD-40
I will be using Marine-Tex as an epoxy. The Pam spray and silicone spray and WD-40 would definitly be the easiest to apply and less chance of missing a spot.
I'm looking for something easy and avaliable
What are your thoughts on this

Thanks

I use a release agent Brownells sell specifically for that.

I also use plain old paste wax on occassion. I was pleasantly surprised how well it works. I kind of smear it on well with a small fairly stiff brush.

After you guys smear on some paste wax, do you let it dry then buff it off or just let it dry and use it as is?????/

I just let it dry, brushing away any lumps.... I am reluctant to buff it in case too much is removed and it fails to release....

I have used nothing but Johnsons Paste Wax for years. Wipe it on with a soft rag , make sure it gets in all the corners, let it dry, and go.

Have never had any trouble removing a barrelled action, no matter what I use for bedding compound.

BTW, I started using the grey (it's almost black) Marine-Tex a few years ago, and have used nothing else since. Haven't tried the white, but am told that it can be dyed any colour you want using the same tints that they have at the paint store.

Had a failure with WD-40. Pam works, but excess can soak into wood. Brownell's, or commercial mould release is just fine. I use paste wax. Readily available, a can lasts forever.

Pam is for eggs, wd40 is for God knows what, silicone is for creating fisheyes in paint, crisco is for baking, car wax may work, grease goes in my milling machine but for preventing epoxy from sticking "mold release" is a good way to go but there are many types of "molds" and you better use the right one. Don't have the info in front of me right now but email me and I will tell you what we use to bed 10 stocks a day (no, not every day, but some days). ian@robertsoncomposites.com Available by mail in Canada.

I use POLYVINYL ALCOHOL MOLD RELEASE from Coast Fibertek it is the exact same stuff that Brownells sell you on at a fraction of the cost . I beleive it is about $11.50 a litre i have had mine on the shelve for 2 years now and have bedded 6-7 guns and have used maybe 1/10 of the bottle , They have lots of other good items too, if anyone wants to build themselves a fibreglass stock ,which i dont recomend.....:( i will finish the one i am doing now then next one will be built by Robertson i think.

Thanks for the feedback guys, Sorry I couldn't participate more My computer crashed due to a faulty hard drive:mad: At least I was able to save my photos but pretty much everything else was lost.

I guess I'll try the paste wax idea, I want something that is avaliable locally and in a town with only 10,000 people there isn't much locally:rolleyes:

I don't know how many times I have heard of guys taking a common product, slapping a new fancy name in it and selling it for 10 times the price. Hot tub companies are notorious for this.
For all a guy knows they take PAM and call it Mould release agent and charge an insane dollar for it.

Thanks and if there is anymore info keep it coming

Uh, Brambles, I have a specially formulated release agent that I have had great success with over the years. It is very easy to use, just spread it on with a soft cloth, kind of like paste wax. :)

I will send you a two ounce container of it for just $25.00 shipped. That is enough for you to do at least twenty guns.

Just send an EMT, cheque or money order. You cannot go wrong with this stuff! :D

I think the "WD" refers to water displacement. Sort of useful as a lubricant but since doing a rec. session years ago where the tympani player had a squeak problem with a pedal and used about 1/2 a can of the stuff to try and rectify the problem, the smell makes me ill!

I've used plain old paste wax as a release agent and it works just fine.
