I have a Canuck defender with a 28" barrel and I have only shot 2 3/4" shells through it without a problem. I am going duck hunting for the first time and the shells I have are 3". Can I assume they will be just as reliable or do I need to go test them out. The range I go to is an hour away and I'd also need to find time. I'm sure with a Remington it would be fine I am just asking because the Canuck is a cheap gun. Thanks for your time, any response is appreciated!

I always pattern my shotgun if I’m shooting different ammo than normal, which while do so will let me know if theres any feeding or extraction issues with the new shells. I’m sure it won’t be an issue if it’s chambered for both lengths but I’d want to know what pattern it’s throwing before I go hunting with it.

That sounds like a good idea. I am going to fit a range day in. Thanks for the advice

Do NOT shoot a 3" shells in a gun only chambered for 2 3/4". The other way around is ok . If you're not sure use 2 3/4". Once apon a time there was only 2 3/4" they kill things just as dead as 3" when you hit them. Your shoulder can thank me after ther hunt.

Enjoy, be safe, and may your game bag be full.

Beyond the shell length, I find that "high" brass is usually a little more reliable in my shotguns than the bargain ammo....
