Relining a barrel

Hello All,

Does anyone here know of any company in Canada that relines barrels? I have an old Savage 99 in 303 Savage that I want to rebuild into a 30/30, but I cannot find a barrel with the old thread type (~1915 gun), so I thought I would look into relining it?

Does anyone know of any drawbacks to doing this? I know one is it screws up the value of the gun, but she has been ridden hard and put away wet too many times to be worth much in its present condition.

A gunsmith could probably cut the appropriate threads into a barrel blank, and chamber it in the (medium pressure, short action) cartridge of your choosing

Such a reline is likely impractical. A rebarrel would be easier. An experienced 'smith should be able to do the machining. Will .30-30 rounds work with the .303 magazine rotor? The cost of the conversion would likely be substantial.

Corey, for what it's worth I have an 1899C , the bore was shot right out of it. The chances of finding a barrel from a parts gun worth much seems tough out here in Alberta, anyways. A good barrel is generally on a good gun. Ebay is just this side of out of control for pricing not to mention few Yankes will ship to Kanuckland.

The 30-30 should work but the rotor may have to be massaged on a lathe as well the follower may need some loving.

I would say your best bet is to just get some 303 Savage brass. Sure it is close to or over $1 per case but when you figure what it will set you back to muck with the barrel you may regret it. My thoughts only, you do as you please.
There is a Savage 1899A that has been on (w)ww.shootist.ab.ca for some time. It is a 30-30 but has a pooched butt stock, perhaps he would be willing to sell it at a reasonable price, probably what it would cost you in smithy fees.
Then you could swing your stocks over to that gun and wammo, you got your 30-30!
