I have a lot of 20 ga. Challenger hulls that I want to reload to their target load specs, 7/8 oz. and about 1,250 to 1,300 fps.

Does anybody have any recipes? I have a variety of powder already but can always buy more.

Most challenger hulls I have seen were made by cheddite. Lots of loads out there for cheddite
In 20 gauge they are among one of the least desirable hulls made. Most have a steel base and they stretch real bad
Me and maybe I am spoiled I would not waste my good components on them and pick up some sts or AA's
Cheers

I have used a lot of challengers as a throw away hull in auto loaders
Lots of recipes out there from major powder mfgs.
I always run them through a supersizer before loading.
Claybuster wad clone of the federals have always given me the best results.
Make sure you use Cheddite primers.

I'm guessing the reference to using Cheddite primers is because some European primers have a larger outside diameter than domestic primers. If that is the case the primer pocket in the hull is also larger, and a domestic primer may fall out

If you want to check, try depriving a few hulls and try to insert an already fired domestic primer by hand. You will quickly see if the pockets are oversize or not

Cheddite primers are a different dimension than a standard 209.
They only fit european hulls well.
On the up side.. They are normally less costly than NA brands.

If you use a cheddite primer in a standard NA hull (aa or rem or fed) they will work. However , my experience ha s been that you can't go back to a standard 209 after as the primer pocket is stretched.

This is my experience only. Yours may vary.

There is actually two different 209 cheddite if I remember right. One is the larger UK dimension and one the US and smaller Ok dimension. Think the big one is red primer hole and other black but cannot remember
which is which

My experience was the 1st cheddites that came to canada were the big ones and when we used them they opened the pockets in out AA hulls so you had to use just cheddite from then on
Must be 10 years ago or later the next batches started coming in were small like a winchester aa and the problem went away
I have not seen a factory challenger hull with the big primers but there could be some old ones I guess
Now we run into them big ones when we buy say 16ga hull sometimes from ballastic products or stuff like that but not anything else I have seen

Another reason I stay away from reloading Cheddite Hulls. Rare yes but is does and has happened a few times

And now that you have received a plethora of information from sources which may or not be credible (myself included... No offence intended to other posters), how's about investing in the Lyman manual for shotshell loading. LOL
FWIW.... I have never had a failure loading a Cheddite hull. However... I have never been in a polka band either, although there are many who have.
There is no replacement for caution and good judgement.

Load them with "Federal Recipes". Quote from Aliant Powders.

That is an interesting quote considering they are plastic base wad and the federals are paper in equivalent promo hulls
Also strange they would not include them in the federal data vs listing specific cheddite data
But hey what do I know they are the experts and it is only target loads so probally fine
Cheers
Unfortunately this is a member site but am sure the same cheddite data is out there free if one searches

If you call or e-mail Ballistic Products they will Email you exact tested recipes for 20ga Cheddite hulls or buy the complete manual

I recently measured some Cheddite primers, comparing to Remington 209P and Winchester W209. All are very nearly the same size, varying approximately .001" to .002". In some cases the Rem and Win were larger than the Cheddite, so I'd say they've been standardized to "our" dimensions.

Yep for the most part but not 10 years ago seems today all is good as far as dimensions goes unless you run into hulls with the UK primers in the small gauges or someones stash of old hulls and original cheddite primers
Lots of talking here on the cheddite who actually make three different 209's the cx1000,2000 and 50
Although they say only one made the US and canada that is BS since I and many others years back purchased both red and black flash hole and our dimension problems began
It is no big deal now just check what your fired hulls have and go from there. Also most guys that use them I threat them like federal 209a and drop the powder charge compared to a winchester
Cheers
