Reload shotgun hulls?

I went to the range today and went through four boxes of 12ga shells. When I was done, I picked up all my hulls and threw them out. There were probably close to 400 hulls in the garbage.

That seems like an awful lot of waste to just landfill. Does anybody reload shotgun shells? The shop at the range sells Federal target loads, so the vast majority of the hulls are those.

Anybody want my used hulls? I could probably supply you with something on the order of a few hundred a month.

I use the fed target blue box for loads but only once after the original firing... Any more and I wouldn't trust them!

Yes sir. Agree. Could never understand what is gained by putting the best of reloading components in a crappy hull.

It looks like I might have to look into reloading shotgun shells. I go through enough of them that it might be worth it, particularly if I can get better performance out of them.

Bearing mind that I've never handloaded anything, what is the difference between a crappy hull and a decent hull, considering the hull doesn't really do anything except blast open and possibly form to the chamber?

The amount you save on loading your own birdshot is almost negligible, you'll be lucky to break even...
Unless you're loading buckshot, slugs, custom birdshot loads, etc you won't save much if anything.

Also, the quality of the hull is important if you're looking to improve performance. The quality of the plastics used determines crimp consistency which affects powder burn/velocity.
