Reloader 17

have used 17 in 300wsm, 325wsm, 270 and 30 06 so far. a winner in the 325 good velocity and accuracy. have gone back to 4350 in the 300 as well as the 30 06. the 270 with 140 grn has lots of promise. i will continue to experiment with other rounds in the future..

I had the exact same results, in the short mags at least. A real winner in the 325 (150fps faster than 4350) but not such an improvement in the 300. Went back to 4350 for now shooting 180gr ABs. Not much speed increase and the accuracy was a wash, but I find RL17 kicks noticeably harder. Will try it again though if/when I switch to 165gr bullets.

i found better speed with the rel17 in the 300 but accuracy wasn't as good. i was using 165 and 180 grn bullets. i only lose about 50 ft with the imr 4350 but gain accuracy. still getting 3000 fps with the imr 4350. if the imr load wasn't so good i would stick with the rel 17. not a huge difference. the gains in the 325wsm were definatly worth while, better accuracy and higher velocity by aprox 125fps. if i were you i would try the rel17. every rifle is different. in yours it maybe the magic powder.

For bullets 87 grains and less RL17 should be pretty good. Maybe, depending on your particular rifle, you can get away with it on 100 gr bullets as well. IMHO, it's to fast for the heavier bullets and if you're shooting the 25-06 why would you want to shoot lighter bullets anyway???

Comparing the 25-06 to the 30-06 or 300WSM, other than to compare suitability of the powder or lack thereof is ???????? The bore diameter of the 30 cal is much larger and a faster powder is necessary to get desired velocities.

I use it with .358 Norma Magnum and get a bit more velocity less pressure than with H-4350. But accuracy is less.

It worked OK in my 7wsm but I went with RL25(better accuracy). It worked extremely well in my 260AI. Works well in my 6SLR too.

Hmmm... looks like everyone that it's having luck with it is using short magnums. I'll just have to try my luck with it. I bought it because of lack of availability of other powders.

Thanks for the replies.

I read somewhere that is was specifically designed for the short magnums, 6mmbr.com I think.

I am using it with great success in my 300 WSM [165 GMX], my 7 SAUM [160 NAB] and my 7x57 [140 NAB]

Better velocities than IMR4350, and at least as accurate. My 300 WSM and the 165 GMX is very accurate and fast.

Regards, Dave

I've used it in the 6.5X55, 7X57 and 35 Whelen. In those cartridges it was consistently a bit slower than H414, and a bit faster than H4350.

R-17 and 208 Amax are a great match in 308, they did gave me great accuracy in my takedown and speed was impressive just south of 2600 fps, i only stop using those because my R-15 +155 Lapua Scenars is just unaqualed in my rifle... JP.

I finally got a chance to make up some loads for a Sako A7 in 7mm-08 that I just bought. I'm using Hornady 139 gr SST's, pushing them with Reloader 17.

I tried 47.7gr and 48.2gr charges. What baffles me is that for both three shot groups the first two bullets would be touching and the third would be a flier about an inch away.

Is it me or is it because I didn't let the barrel cool off enough?

Use five shot groups. The time it takes to load and carefully shoot five shots will not be too fast to over heat the barrel.

I usually do shoot five shot groups but for quick load work ups I shoot three shot groups.

I'll move up to five shot groups when I'm getting close to a good load.

I acquired about 4 boxes of Barnes, .277 diameter, 110 gr TTSX bullets, so have been playing a bit to see how they pan out.

I have a Vanguard S1 in 270, that shoots the 140 NAB/Vihtavuori N165, into nice little groups, and the 130 NAB/H4831sc likewise.

However, the 110 TTSX seemed to be disinclined to group under 1.25" with IMR4350, IMR4831, N204, RL19, and a couple of others.

On a lark, I grabbed the Reloder 17, and loaded 5 each with 58, 59, and 60 grains. The 60 grain load showed the most promise, with the group measuring right on ¾" at 100M

Went home, cleaned everything up, and loaded a box of that recipe. [R-P brass, CCI 200, 60/RL17, 110 TTSX]

Back to the range this AM, First group went .62", second measures .34" Better yet, all in a tight cluster exactly 3" high at 100.
I believe I am ready to hunt! :)

After a bit of experimenting with IMR-4350, IMR 7828 and RL-17 in 300WSM with 180 bullets the clear winner was RL-17. As accurate as 4350 but over 150fps faster, 7828 had good speed but no where near as accurate. RL-22 and H-4831 where very disappointing in this caliber speed wise. Your rifles may differ.
