reloader 22 low velocity

loading reloader 22 behind 160 accubonds. nosler brass and fed 215 primers. max load in nosler book is 63 grains and when I ran that load over my chrony I got 2500 fps which is way lower than the book states. the rifle is a sako 85 finnlight. 71 grains got me 3000 fps over the chrony which of course is 8 grains over. no pressure signs. easy extraction primers look the same as 63 grain load. whats up with this?
 
If you can find a copy of Ken Waters Pet Loads, he has two articles written on the 7mm Rem Mag.....the second article from January 1981 takes a look at the discrepancies of reloading data on the cartridge......and how to go about staying within safe pressure limits while developing a load.....If you can find a copy of Pet Loads, it's definitely worth reading....
 
That does seem awlfuly low...My Browning A Bolt with a 26 inch barrlel gives me just over 2900 fps with R22 at 63grains and 160 gr Barnes X bullets...Are you sure it was Reloader 22? How far away was your Chronagraph set....should be at least about 12 feet from the muzzle. Have you tested the chronagraph with other loads or guns to be sure it is not Kaput?

Ya something sounds fishy. Im getting 2883 with 210gr bergers with 69.5gr or rl-22 in .300 win mag and a 24" barrel.
 
I have loaded for a number of 24" barrelled 7mm Rem Mags over the years.

With the 160 Partition, to reach 3000 fps, the charge varied a lot from rifle
to rifle.

I reached it with 64.5 grains in one, but the others [5 of them] all needed
anywhere from 67 to 71 grains of RL22 to reach 3000. [a speed I feel is about right for the 160 in the 7 mag]

I believe one of the issues with the 7mm Rem Mag is that chamber/throat dimensions vary a bit.
Some earlier-built 700's would accept quite a bit more powder safely than will some later ones.

If you are not noting any pressure signs with your present load, and your chrony reads 3000 [+ - pennies],
I would call it a load and carry on.

Be AWARE that if you change powder lot numbers, you should drop
back a couple of grains and work up again to be safe.

checked velocity with another chrony and for sure it was 12 feet from muzzle.
 
I agree dave I want a 160 to leave the barrel at around 3000fps. not getting any pressure signs and have another 3 pounds of reloader 22 with the same lot #.will be sure to back off if I get another lot #. I guess with the bullet seated out further than the book max the pressure is lower therefore lower velocity??

I haven't found COL to be much of a factor unless you seat the bullets much deeper than normal, or until you start seating very close to the lands, where increasing the COL usually results in the pressure and velocity increasing.
 
Why not email the powder company and ask them if they have received any complaints about that lot Number. Maybe there was a bad batch that was recalled. Can't hurt to ask.
