I have shot them (168 amax) out to 825y with good results. Don't know if that counts as 'long' range to you lol. Maybe it's medium range?
Varget for powder, Lapua cases, CCI200 primers. I was seating them to mag length and they worked well. Now I'm seating them ~.02" off the lands and they seem to group a skootch better.
What issues are you having with the 168SMK. I know a few guys than can make it to 800y no issues with Federal GMM factory ammo.
Do you know what velocity you are achieving? I'm at ~2675fps. I'm using 43.7gr of Varget on collet neck sized lapua brass, 44gr on virgin brass.
Personally, I don't like Federal brass, but if you're getting good results with smk and that brass, it's hard to point the finger in that direction.
If you're really set on amax's, I'd say use Varget, try a bunch of different charge weights and seating depths, use a chronograph, see what works.....but don't chase your tail too long or you'll end up spending more money than you're trying to save![]()
I have 2 Savage 10TR’s both with a 20” barrel.
One (in an MDT LSS Chassis) does not like any bullet weight over 155gr which is bizarre. I used various charges in Varget, RL15 and BL-C(2). Shoots like 1.5 - 2 MOA with 168 gr projectiles but loves 155 AMAX.
The other in a custom made pillar bedded McMillan “style” stock loves 168 gr AMAX and Hornady BTHP Match.
Best recipes with 168 AMAX has been 43 grains of RL15 or 44.4 grains of BL-C(2). Primers are flat with the BL-C(2) charge but both loads shoot cloverleafs all day long.
