Hello,
Just wondering if anyone out there has reloaded for the M14 rifle using heavier than 150gr bullets. I was thinking of trying out the SMK's in 168gr.
I have read that going heavier than 150gr may damage the rifle but haven't found any first hand accounts.
Any load data would be appreciated as well.

Thanks

ps. Not sure if this should have gone in the MBR forum or not. It was a toss up and I chose to put it here)

168s are fine as long as you use a fast powder.
It's the gas pressure at the port that'll bend your oprod.

That being said I load just 150s with either of the 4895s.

i use 180gr and 36gr of 3031, 500+ rounds out of chicom 14 and still good to go, cases fall short of 150gr milsurp when ejected on to the ground

36gr of 3031 is well below even Hodgdons recommended STARTING load for a 180gr bullet.
I think you can jack that up a bit 375RUM.
3031 is a good powder for M14s right in that proper Burn rate region.

if you do a little more reseach you'll see that the recommended loads are 150, 165 and 168- it's exremely well documented and those that use 175s and up will have problems with ACCELERATED WEAR LATER ON-the ODD boxs of 180's is all right, but not as a steady diet- ref m14 match loads in your search engine- this and several other topics have been well- discussed in the battle rifles forum; the platform has been around since 57, and there's really nothing new about it-also, any remarks about the GARAND apply to the m14

168 gr BTHP match over 42.2 grains of varget and a coal length of 2.830 is crack for my rifle .. no complaints , not even getting cratered primers , which happened with federal blue box 150's quite frequently .

It is generally recommended to load between 147-173gr bullets for the M14 using standard jacketed bullet loads.

A powder in the suitable burn rate range for the action of this type of semi auto gas rifle such as IMR 4895, H4895, AA 2495, BL C2, H335, Win 748, IMR 4064 (and there are others).
