Is it a good idea to buy Winchester 22 hornet brass and just send it through the sizing die? 100 pieces Winchester brass for 50$
I actually moved on to AA1680, once I got some, and was experimenting with H4198 on John Barsness' recommendation at the end of last season. But looking over my records from a couple years ago, I think I am going to try Lil Gun again now that I understand it, and the cartridge, better. It does appear to be temperature sensitive, so maybe not the best choice on a prairie dog hunt in the heat of summer, but my records show the velocities being quite consistent at the bench once I sorted out what was actually the max load.
I believe you'll need to do in two steps. There is a very detailed video on Youtube about how to do it. Also, be aware that the wall thickness of the necks of .22 Hornet brass is quite a bit thinner than the .17HH brass.
The Remington 6-1/2 primers work excellent with the 22 hornet, they were actually designed for the 22 hornet.I never tried lil' gun in a 17 Hornet but out of my 22 Hornet, I find it very consistent. The key is to use a pistol primer - I use a match pistol primer - as it seems to allow the pressure curve to start up more smoothly. The 17 may be more sensitive to temperature as it is a smaller projectile but it seems to burn nicely with my 35 gr Vmax loads.
$1 a piece for brass, load them 10 times (.10 per shot)
