Reloading .22 Hornet: Savage M25 / Anschutz M1771

Ammo deal

  • sourced 45gr PPU ammo $40.99 per 50 rounds
  • 82 cents ea. vs about 70 cents ea. to reload
  • Anschutz / PPU ammo very good accuracy maybe not worth handloading ;)

That Anschutz seems to be quite the shooter........how did the 100 round break in go?

Also, not a bad price for factory ammo considering the accuracy you are getting out of it.

I don't load 50gr bullets at all in the .22 Hornet....too heavy for my rifle.

Better luck with the 35gr. or 45gr. bullets. Accuracy with 40gr. bullets was ok, but had to be at a COAL which was too long for the magazine, resulting in having to load 1 at a time, which I just do not prefer.

Good luck with your Anschutz rifle....that is some good German quality right there. Probably will result in you not using your Savage as much ;)

Anschutz handloaded: results

  • Hornady 50gr SP / Lil Gun / PPU brass / WSR
  • ~2600 fps estimated mv groups as shown
  • maybe could tighten group by fine tuning powder charge
  • or fine as is blame gusty wind today ;)

I recall standing in a the middle of a big field with my Hornet and a box of 50 rounds. Each time I shot a ground hog, another one, somewhere in the field would stick his head up to see what the noise was. I emptied the box. Previously I used a 243 for that job. The noise would drive them deep underground.

It really is a sweet little cartridge, that is not only very efficient but delivers way beyond its class, expecially with powders such as Lil Gun.

I used to use my CZ 22wmr for shooting bunnies out to 100yds, but my Ruger 77R chambered for the 22Hornet is now my go to rifle for that job and I can extend the range out to 150+ yards if I do my part on trajectory.

I know this thread is a couple months old now, and also about the venerable 22 Hornet (which I used to load for nigh 35 years ago), but I just want to mention that I really love my Savage M25 Lightweight Varminter in 17 Hornet. I’ve shot .25” groups at 100yds with it with factory stuff and .75” groups with hand loads at 200yds.

To the OP, that little Anschutz is a piece of art! If I was in the market for a new toy, that would definitely be one I’d be considering! Well done.
