I have an ar that I have been saving brass for and a friend recently bought an m1 carbine. I am wondering if there are any powders that would be suitable for both cartridges.

Any other recommendations for newbie reloading .223 for an ar would be appreaciated.

Sorry, but not really. The .30 is a glorified pistol round. The slowest powder useful for it would in most cases be too fast to be safe in the .223 Rem.

I suppose you could use Varget in the 30. Just fill the case up to the bottom of the bullet, seat, and away you go. Low pressure, low velocity, big fireball, and prolly not too good for the gas system (are M1's gas operated?)

I am probly going to get all my stuff from higginsons as they are less than an hour away from me.

my father wants to relaod .308 so I am thinking of getting a turret press. I dont need a progressive as I dotn shoot enough out of the ar to make it worth while.

I think a turret press would be best as it will allow me to set all the dies once and not have to mess with them. Also I can make complete cartriges and not be left with a tray full of half loaded cases if I have to leave.

I use single stage for rifles. The dies have a lcoking mechanism on them, so you just remove the die and swap it out.. its good to go the next time you use it. No farting around with it.
And:
reloading time is your time... plan to do it when your not worried about other stuff. Lots of time to concentrate and focus on what your doing. It doesnt take long to reload, but if your in a rush, you might make a mistake.
For instance... I was all excited one time, and forgot to lube my brass. Got one stuck in the die. I learned after that.

"...Just fill the case up to the bottom of the bullet, seat, and away you go..." Don't be daft. That's about as unsafe as you can get.
The two cartridges don't use the same powders. My carbine likes IMR4227 with a 110 grain HP bullet.

I beg to disagree. If you're using a significantly slower powder, and are not compressing it, you're fine. You could pack that case to the gills with - for example - 4350, and it would work. Pressures would be extremely low, so you'd be safe. Would be nowhere near optimum, but safe. I'd also suggest that you not try this if you're an inexperienced reloader and are not 100% sure what you're doing.

I'd like to add that this is not a good idea with cast bullets, as the pressure will be too low to deform the bullet to form a gas-tight seal with the bore
