Reloading 260AI where to start

I have a Krieger barrel on a 40X action, chambered in 260AI. It is a very fine shooting rifle. I have a zinger load in it using Vihtavuori N560 and the 140 VLD. I form my cases from 7-08 brass to avoid the "donut" mentioned earlier. I use the "Cream-of-Wheat" method, and cases come out perfectly. Then it's load and shoot. Regards, Eagleye.

rhs, great looking rig and it looks like another great shooting Savage.

Given the gale and likely shorter OAL (you are feeding from the mag), I think you are pretty much there. Now that you have fully formed cases, creep up in 0.1gr increments at 200yds. My guess is that you will find the load around 48.2 to 48.4gr.

At least, that is where my barrels have like the Scenar.

Yeah, that's the only downside I've found to the AICS....the short mag. I seated those bullets to 2.837 which is pretty much max for that mag. Using my Stoney Point gauge, I measured out that the chamber can handle the Scenars seated out to 2.900. I'm actually surprised it shot as well as it did with that much jump. The new Savage factory centre-feed mags and the SSS extended versions allow a 3.000 bullet length. Too bad AI didn't go bigger with their mags. I'm guessing most people that drop 700 actions in the AICS stocks are using custom barrels anyway and just get them chambered for the mag length, so it's not a concern.

possible solution to the .243 donut effect?

Forster product:
Case Trimmer Accessories: Neck Reamers Neck Reamer #264
neck_reamer.jpg

Neck Reamer #264, for Original, Classic and Power Case Trimmers. Use with .264" diameter bullets. Thick case necks can cause high chamber pressures and flyers. The Forster Neck Reamer mounts in the cutter of a Forster Case Trimmer in place of the pilot and removes the excess brass from the neck walls. The Forster Neck Reamer is manufactured from high grade, wear-resistant tool steel and ground .0025" to .003" over the maximum bullet diameter. The staggered tooth design cuts the brass smoothly without chattering. Photo illustrates three different sizes.

Only if your case necks are dead true when you stick that reamer into it. I would use a lathe. Suspending a case by its rim and hoping it stays true will I jam a cutter into the neck doesn't instill much confidence.

Otherwise, you will machine the necks wonky and have destroyed brass.

The best solution is use quality 260R brass, or neck down 7-08 or 308 brass. Unless you keep the shoulder in the same place as the parent 243 case, using 243 to make 260R brass just leads to more headaches then I would ever want.
