Reloading .300 Savage for Bolt-action

Just wondering what everyone else is using, and the results you're getting. I'm looking for a accurate and useful loading for my Remington 722 chambered in .300 savage, and am wondering what you guys are using with 150gr bullets (FMJ & SP)? I've got some Varget powder, as well as trimmed .308 cases and CCI BR2 primers. The rifle is equipped with iron sights, and it to be my go-to hunting rifle out to about 300 yards, but more than likely less. Let me know what you guys are using in your Bolt-actions, and what loads you would recommend, preferably that use Varget. Cheers!

I have had no experience with what you are doing, so can't comment on that part.
However, as a heads up, don't think of the Savage 99 as a weak lever action. Chambering the 308W for it shows the Savage people consider it as a strong action, maybe as strong as the 722.

I have had good results in my 99F with a near max load of RL15 and IMR 4895 using 165 gr Hornadys. I have not yet played with 150 gr bullets because I find the 165 a good compromise between the 150 and 180 gr bullets in both the 300 savage and 308 win.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend. It just seems to me that these loads are being neutered for some reason. Surely they can be bumped up from their rather meager 40k PSI loading up to something a bit more substantial, no?

Then again, having said that, 44 grains of varget in a .308 only go about 2800 fps, or only 200-300 faster than "similar" loadings for the .300 savage... would 38-40 Gr. varget be an appropriate start?

In a lever action 99 I had sub 1/2 " groups with 42gr Win 748 /150gr Hornady,165gr Hornady- 41gr Win 748 and 40gr of the same with 180gr bullets...........Harold

Certainly wasn't offended in any way.
Actually, I didn't like what I wrote very much, myself!
As I thought more about it, I remembered that the 300 Savage is loaded light. Probably because of other guns out there with weaker actions.
So, if I had the 722 I would just start at standard 300 loads and build up until I got a definite sign of pressure, such as a sticky bolt.
I would then drop back a couple grains and that would be my load.
